Packed with illustrations of the unintended consequences of command and control thinking, you will be amazed that management of our organizations should be so appalling. You will see how customer service is poor and carries high costs and that changing the way the work is designed and managed will result in lower costs and better service. But, as Seddon points out, these are things managers cannot "see" from their current position. Managers don't know what they don't know. Seddon's case is that taking this view teaches managers to change their thinking, and he shows how the very observations they make when understanding what he calls "the what and why of current performance as a system" become the building blocks of the systems solution. Would you like work to work?

John's book applies the Toyota lean manufacturing system to service organisations. Key is the end-to-end flow, from the customer perspective. For those familiar with Theory of Constraints there are some echoes between the two.

In this book, John carefully corrects some misunderstandings about the Toyota system and its roots. He also uses ample examples of why management frequently creates processes that create waste. And then managers wonder why there are inefficencies. The viscious circle then completes with new processes to analyse the previous ones. Yes, more waste results!

Business needs to be dynamic, flexible and focussed on value adding tasks. John shows a way to focus on just that. With the UK phenomenon for accountants to be MD's/CEO's, its a tough sell though. Decades of command and control through the management factory and solutions that constrain the business are difficult to shake off. People are after all frequently rewarded for adding accreditation, process or reporting to the cost base. All is not lost though, for there are young, enterprising businesses growing that will - with guidance like John's - manage to grow, be customer focussed and efficient.

A useful book for a those concerned with rising costs and falling service, especially if you are willing to do something about it!

About the Author

William A. Link, was born in Evanston, Illinois, and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, where he attended local public schools. Graduating from Davidson College in 1976, he received the Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia in 1981.
For the next twenty-three years, he taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro; the courses he taught included North Carolina History, the history of the American South, twentieth-century American history.
Between 1995 and 1998, he served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and between 1998 and 2004 as head of the UNCG History Department. In 2004, he moved to the University of Florida to occupy the Richard J. Milbauer chair in history, replacing longtime chairholder Bertram Wyatt-Brown. He currently teaches courses in southern history at Florida, and supervises or co-supervise seven doctoral students.
Link’s publications include five books about various topics in the history of the 19th and 20th century south.
He lives in Gainesville, Florida with his wife, Susannah, daughter Josie, four cats, and one border collie.

B. Kumaravadivelu is professor of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at San Jose State University. His previous book, "Beyond Methods: Macrostrategies for Language Teaching," was published by Yale University Press in 2002.

Pave the path as you walk it

The study of language teaching methodology in the 20th century, as documented by the likes of Richards and Rodgers and delivered to bemused master's degree students (I was one) is a study in failure. Methods came along in waves as new thinking came to dominate - grammar translation, the Reform Movement, the direct method, audiolingualism and situational language teaching, a range of esoteric methods such as suggestopedia and community language learning (did anyone really use these?), all culminating in communicative language teaching in the last years of the century, an approach about which there was so little agreement it could mean almost anything to anyone, and which gave newly minted teachers the question-begging line in job interviews, "I'm a communicative teacher; I use the communicative method.".

The notion of the one true method, the grand prize in the search for the key to language teaching and learning, was left in a shambles, and teachers were left to do whatever seemed to 'work' in the classroom. Amid the confusion, some scholars called for an enlightened eclecticism, a combining of techniques in a principled way to encourage learning. Stern tried to formalize the new reality, describing teacher choices along a series of content options (pronunciation, grammar, cultural, etc.) and teaching strategy dimensions (intralingual-crosslingual, analytic-experiential, explicit-implicit).

Kumaravadivelu continues the quest in this spirit. Rejecting the notion of the one true method, he argues that teachers need to come to an understanding of the needs of students in their particular context, and encourages teachers to develop their own theory of practice, a personal theory based on their understanding of their students and context. This book is an attempt to lay out the territory of language teaching as currently understood, which includes maximizing learning opportunities, promoting learner autonomy, contextualizing linguistic input, and integrating the language skills, so that teachers might,through reflection and practice, come to an understanding of where they fall in each of these areas (the macrostrategies of the title) in their particular teaching context. Each chapter is an overview of the theory in the area, and is followed, to Kumaravadivelu's credit, by two detailed plans as to how the macrostrategy might be implemented (what he calls a microstrategy). He also includes action research-type projects for teachers to explore their practice - and work on their theory of practice - in each area.

It is a bold attempt, and if the strategies are not implemented as widely as the author hopes (who really has the time and energy?), the book still serves as a useful summary of what it means to teach and learn a language these days - an activity the scope of which has expanded enormously since the sentence drills of a century ago. Kumaravadivelu's final message to teachers - to "pave the path as you walk it" - is a satisfying metaphor for the learning that is needed in the process of becoming a teacher, a process that is always ongoing, never completed.

Great contribution to practice and theory in ESL/EFL

This book can certainly empower language teachers becoming well-equipped practitioners and thinkers to realize their commitment to teaching and meet students' needs. The framework of the whole book as well as the structure in each chapter was so comprehensive and awareness-raising that I had to reflect on my own teaching beliefs and reshape my cognition within the context, after having had 20 years of English teaching experience in Taiwan and now pursuing my Ph.D. degree in bilingual education in the United States.
I highly recommend this book as one of the most valuable books in ESL/EFL teaching as teachers should read it more than once, not only for the author's philosophy of education and pedagogical insights, but also for the growth and development of our own theory and practice in this field.

Definitive

Kumaravadivelu has done a marvelous job of bringing the state of language teaching beyond the realm of methods. The macrostrategies are not new ideas for most professional teachers, but they are the critical factors in defining best teaching practices from maximizing learning opportunities to contextualizing inputs. You can live by these principles and adapt them to your own teaching, which is exactly what the author suggests. While I think some of the examples from the classroom could be stronger, they suffice to make his point, and illustrate the application of these ideas in realtime. The genius of his writing is in putting these ideas together in a coherent set that will make sense to a large majority of language teachers. This is one of the most important books to come out for professional development in language teaching in the last ten years, and it is hard to imagine any teacher who would not benefit from serious reflection on his ideas, and intelligent application to the classroom. He takes the teacher-reader from the "passive technician" to the "formative intellectual" in conscious control of their own "method" based upon sound macro-strategies for teaching and learning.

David Fawcett PhD, LCSW is a social worker, sex therapist, and clinical hypnotherapist with a private practice in Ft. Lauderdale specializing in gay men's health. This Book Maps the Way to Healthy Sexuality

I contributed the Foreward to this book because this issue -- separating my past meth use from my sex life -- has been the single biggest challenge to my ongoing recovery from addiction. This book goes there, directly and with great compassion and insight. And, as someone who can be triggered by various things, I can only say that Fawcett remains just clinically detached enough to make the patient stories relevant but never indulgent or exploitative. There IS a healthy sex life on the other side of addiction, and this book maps the way.

A Book the Gay Community Needs

This is a very good book, written by an experienced practitioner who has worked with many gay clients as they struggled towards recovery from crystal meth addiction, a drug that has been the scourge of gay communities nationwide since the 1980s. In some respects, however, the title of the book, with a subtitle of A Gay Man's Guide to Sex and Recovery, is misleading. The subtitle provides a clear indication of the intended audience for this text, but I believe it deserves reading by a much broader audience.

I struggled with the first two sections, not because the material was difficult, but because I was trying to determine to just what audience Dr. Fawcett was addressing this book. Sometimes it seemed like a guide for mental health professionals, offering practical advice on helping clients recover from meth addiction. At other times, it was clearly directed at a non-professional audience as he explained terms that would be familiar to any mental health professional. But I was continually impressed with Dr. Fawcett's use of metaphor as a way of making more difficult concepts accessible to an audience that had not been through professional training.

The real "meat" of the book is the third section in which Dr. Fawcett describes in some detail the best practices for helping a client end his/her meth addiction. The first two sections laid a solid foundation for the third. Even though this section does seem more clearly oriented towards the recovering meth addict, a discerning professional will find everything s/he needs in order to incorporate some of these ideas into his/her own practice. I hope Dr. Fawcett's next book will be one more specifically oriented towards mental health and addiction recovery professionals.

Some topics were explained well and thoroughly, such as the discovering worthiness section, while other topics, e.g., codependency, deserved a deeper explanation. There was some repetition, but perhaps Dr. Fawcett was just following the Rule of Three in order to make sure that the concepts were instilled in his readers' brains. I was especially pleased to see the work of Harville Hendrix (Getting the Love You Want; Keeping the Love You Find) cited as well as the triad of victim, persecutor and rescuer described by Diane Zimberoff. Although the writing was sharp and clear, I think he could have benefitted from a better editor. He certainly could have benefitted from a better proofreader or fact-checker: Alfred Kinsey was an ENTOmologist, not an ETYmologist. I'm sure Dr. Fawcett is aware of this fact, and some word processing autocorrect feature decided to change Dr. Kinsey's field of study.

One of my biggest frustrations with the first two sections was the sparse citations. Dr. Fawcett would make an assertion that is clearly beyond the scope of his direct experience, but then he fails to provide a citation. I learned a number of new bits of knowledge, but I don't know their source! If I had turned in one of these chapters as an assignment in grad school, it would have been returned to me with "Cite? Cite?" all over the text. However, because Dr. Fawcett was writing for a more general audience, he made the reasonable and valid assumption that an over-abundance of footnotes would be offputting to the more casual reader. Still, I want those citations, Dr. Fawcett! My pedantic soul cannot rest until I know the source of some of the gems you provided! Yes, I'm one of those readers who actually reads footnotes and bibliographies!

Which leads me back to the question that haunted me as I was reading this book: who is the intended audience? The most obvious target would be either a meth addict ensnared by the drug or one who is just starting recovery. However, I have a hard time imagining that such an audience would be enthusiastic about reading this text. Mental health professionals and substance use counselors certainly would benefit from this book. I think this book would be helpful for the non-addict who has an addict or recovering addict in his/her life. But, even though I'm not a meth addict or a recovering addict, there were numerous points in the book where I smiled in recognition, as, for example, when Dr. Fawcett wrote of "damaged goods" -- a theme with which I have been struggling much of my life, first when finding out I had a hearing impairment at age five, then coming to terms with my sexual orientation as an adolescent and young adult, and then again when I learned I was HIV-positive. I have used those very words.

Many of the things Dr. Fawcett describes are applicable to gay men more generally, and not just to those who are recovering from a meth addiction. Any gay man reading this book is likely to find something useful here. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that those who have never had to deal with meth addiction *in particular* should read this text. While meth use is rampant, I believe the majority of gay men are not users or addicts, and therefore there is a stigma associated with those who use crystal meth. I would hope that such readers would find greater understanding and greater compassion for meth addicts and recovering meth addicts after reading Dr. Fawcett's book. In the final chapter Dr. Fawcett lists "Seven Essential Tools for a Strong Recovery." I would go further: that chapter should have been titled "Seven Essential Tools for Living a Happy Life." *Any* reader could benefit from that chapter, with its elements of positive psychology.

I have only one quibble, and it's an obscure one. Dr. Fawcett describes Mindfulness Based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy as the third wave of this therapeutic modality that began with Skinner and continued with the work of Ellis and Beck. Without taking anything away from MBCBT -- and it is a powerful therapy -- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has staked a claim as the third wave. I view MBCBT as enhanced CBT, having borrowed mindfulness which is a core element of ACT. I think ACT is an outstanding therapy, and I can see how it can be applied in dealing with substance abuse issues. I'll admit that I'm partial to ACT, so I'm going to insist that it rather than MBCBT is the "third wave." Sorry, Dr. Fawcett. ;-)

I like how this powerful book that sheds light on complex and critical issue. The book is written comprehensively, and with obvious care, and an organic flow of ideas and information about the dynamics of addiction, eroticism and the brain's wiring - and how to overcome and heal from such powerful and dangerous forces. The information on healing from addiction and shame is clear and useful, with information that can benefit everyone on a healing path. I am already sharing passages from this section of the book with my clients, gay and straight. I highly recommend this book to clinicians and those who struggle with addiction.
