You can use this from the first chapter

I had the good fortune to see Dr. Baum at a conference where she presented on MI and practical applications in the classroom. This book is an expansion of that session. There are lots of practical strategies presented and this book really is a Tool Kit! Every teacher should have a copy for their immediate and practical use. BUT as good as this book is Susan is better in person. If you ever have the chance to see her present go for it! She is GREAT!

Thom portrays a man of principle―an abolitionist and Union supporter in a divided city―who found himself at odds with his Quaker faith. He disagreed with them about temperance, trading in whiskey and enjoying fine wine and champagne. Forbidden to marry the only woman he ever loved―his first cousin Elizabeth―he remained a lifelong bachelor.

Johns Hopkins died of pneumonia at the age of 78 on December 24, 1873. This volume includes his will and instructions to the trustees, in which he articulated his wishes for a school of medicine, a university press, an orphanage, and a school of nursing. Among his stipulations was that the hospital treat anyone, regardless of race, sex, age, or ability to pay.

This reissued edition brings this compelling portrait to a new generation of readers.

Isatou held her head up high and soon would close in on Nijau, her village. Raindrops fell all around her, but soon her palm-leaf basket would tumble to the ground to mix with the rain and dirt. Isatou’s fruit was scattered about the ground, but there was no way to carry it. There was some “strange fabric” dancing in the wind, a fabric that would hold her fruit. Her palm-leaf basket would be left behind to “crumble and mix back in with the dirt.” Grandmother Mbombeh frowned at the sight of Isatou’s strange fabric bag. “Plastic,” she exclaimed, “There’s more in the city.”

The plastic bag didn’t last and soon Isatou left it behind. The bags seemed to multiply with blue ones, red one, clear ones, and even purple. There were more and more because “one plastic bag becomes two ... then ten ... then a hundred.” The years passed by and Isatou found herself to be a woman, hardly noticing “the ugliness around her.” The goats had begun eating those very bags, the ugliness she had passed by, and were dying. The goats were foraging in the garbage, eating the bags. Isatou began collecting the bags, but what would she do with them?

This is the amazing story of Isatou, a young woman who empowered others by looking for solutions. Isatou Cheesay watched as garbage began to overtake and destroy Njau, Gambia. Rather than ignore it, she began to gather up the ugliness and turned it into a thing of beauty, “recycled plastic purses.” Other women began to crochet and Isatou’s solution began to reclaim her village. Young students will enjoy learning about her journey in an expanded author’s note. There is a photograph of Isatou and some other women of Njau. In the back of the book is an index, a “Wolof Glossary and Pronunciation Guide, a Timeline (1970s to 2014), and additional recommended book resources to explore.

This is a beautifully illustrated book about how one woman in Gambia, West Africa decided to reduce the amount of plastic bags littering the area and killing animals when they ate them by crocheting items out of the plastic and selling them. I think that the book shows the problems from the plastic bag pollution and how one woman helped to change the situation. This book would be great in elementary school and middle school libraries to use when teaching about pollution and recycling. I have crocheted items from plastic bags and the plastic is not as gentle and comfortable to knit with as yarn or fabric. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it.

WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: One Plastic Bag has so many hooks. First, Miranda incorporates Gambian culture and language into the text, immersing the reader into Isatou’s world. Second, the book has great read aloud-ability. Miranda uses a repeating refrain: “first one, then two, then ten,” which makes kids want to chant along. Finally, who can resist a story about one person seeing an insurmountable problem and taking a small step that leads to a giant change?

Simple fiber crafts for kids

After taking an introductory tapestry weaving class last winter, I was looking for additional resources for inspiration and instruction. I have been an admirer of Maryanne Moodie's tapestry work for a while, and when I learned she was publishing this book last March, I immediately preordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival. I received the book today and was so disappointed to find it is not a comprehensive manual of Maryanne Moodie style tapestry weaving, but rather a how-to book of the kinds of crafts you see on Pinterest or that kids make at summer camp - like a floppy basket made from strips of blue jeans, a yarn-wrapped lamp shade, a "festival hair tapestry", a yarn-decorated bicycle basket, a tote bags made from a store-bought rug, and a gods-eye updated with fringe, to name a few. If you are looking for some projects to entertain an 8 year old on a rainy day, this book may work for you. If you are looking for inspiration and techniques for creating beautiful modern tapestries, I'd look elsewhere. I agree with another reviewer that "Beyond Craft: The Art Fabric," by Mildred Constantine and Jack Lenor Larsen is excellent for inspiration. I also recommend "DIY Woven Art" by Rachel Denbow for both inspiration and for detailed and easy to understand tutorials on various stitches and techniques - this book is basically everything I expected On the Loom to be.

It's okay, but I expected a great deal more from Maryanne

I was so excited to receive this book. I preordered it and was counting down the days for when it would come in the mail. I even waited until I could devote my full and undivided attention to poring over the sumptuous pictures of creatively woven wall hangings. To say, I was underwhelmed is an understatement. I am a beginner weaver and I realize there is an importance of Maryanne fully explaining color theory and the various stitches of basic weaving. But, her tutorials and items she chose to highlight fell completely short for me. I follow her (and have for some time) on instagram and her website. She does incredibly modern things with weaving and has truly elevated this craft to a full art form. I was hoping that she would explain some of her techniques for her truly modern and avant-garde uses of fiber and the loom. While she did touch upon circular looms and looms using natural objects, she did not give any insight in how she played around with pattern and fiber to do some of her truly wonderful works. I understand that she may not want to give all her "secrets" away, but I just didn't think she went far enough in discussing how she lays out her patterns and work prior to weaving and how she incorporates three dimensional objects into her weavings. I know this is not a true secret because other weavers doing similar things have done this in their books. She does incredible work. Her weavings are fresh and dreamy and just altogether fantastic. I wish her book would have inspired me to attempt some of her more unusual patterns or weavings. But, it didn't. It's not a terrible book but like I said, it just fell short. Maybe I expected more from her because I know what she can do. And, I figured she would let us in on how she took this art form and truly made it her own so that we, in turn, could make it our own. I hope she does another book and expands more upon weaving, pattern, stitches, and color.

Disappointing

I like Moodie's work. Unfortunately, the book falls short. I returned it because I did not find a single project that I consider attractive or useful.
I agree with design lover; Rachel Denbow's book on DIY Weaving delivers exactly what I expected from Moodie's book.
