Very good for struggling in Real Analysis

There is no problem solutions for Real Analysis texts available in U.S. since most of the teachers believe that Math students in grad level should be more creative. However, not all students in Real Analysis are potential mathmatician. If they lost in class and must study by theirselves, they may feel frustrated missing all the stuff contained in problems. The material in "Principles of Real Analysis" may not superior much than other famous text(like Royden, I think Royden is clear enough but too much mysterious things lie in problems.). But use it with this workbook, you will find much comfortable in self study. It helps a lot not only in my homework assignment, but also in my understanding.

Must have for anyone taking Real Analysis

Before buying this book, I was failing Real Analysis. Now I have a prayer of passing. Thank goodness I found it in time. For it to be of use, you need to buy the companion book "Principles of Real Analysis", same authors. On the down side, it doesn't have an index, but overall, well worth the money. Besides, it is the only source I've found of worked-out Real Analyis problems outside of borrowing from other students who have already taken the course.

About the Author
Robert S. Boikess is a Professor of Chemistry at Rutgers University, where he served as department chair for nine years. He received his PhD at Columbia under the direction of Ronald Breslow and was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow with Saul Winstein at UCLA. He is the author or co-author of three editions of CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES, a General Chemistry text with accompanying lab manual and other supplements; four editions of HOW TO SOLVE GENERAL CHEMISTRY PROBLEMS; ELEMENTS OF CHEMISTRY, GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOLOGICAL; and CHEMISTRY FOR BIOLOGISTS. Highly recommended

Of all the "mathematical methods" or "applied mathematics" books
on my shelf, this is the one I find myself turning to most often.
There are many other books where you can look up, say, the
orthogonality properties of some "special function," but for an
authoritative explanation of fundamental mathematics as used
in physics today -- especially computational physics -- Cantrell
is excellent.
I often have to check with Cantrell to get an answer to questions
like "Is this result in this other text true in general, or only
in the special case that its author describes?". I never have
to double check to see to what extent the results in Cantrell
apply -- he makes things like that quite clear.
Cantrell has included a healthy dose of linear algebra and
functional analysis in his text, at the expense of some of the
chapters in more traditional mathematical physics texts, such as
those on contour integration or special functions.
However, examples of the use of special functions are sprinkled
liberally thoughout the text. And although the chapter on that
subject is mostly about Bessel functions, Cantrell's discussion
of Bessel functions is, typically, different from and more
insightful than conventional treatments.
My quibbles with the book have to do not with its content, but
with "first edition" glitches -- a figure here or a typo there.
And some sort of bug in the index preparation process left many
of the page numbers referred to in the index "off" by a page
or two. On the other hand, the hardcover edition that I have
lays open nicely on my desk, and after heavy use the binding
has not broken, and no pages have fallen out.
It would be nice if there were an appendix of "Answers to Exercises,"
or maybe a "Student's Guide." However, many of the exercises
are of the "Show that ..." variety, so the lack of such an appendix
is not nearly the drawback that it might be.
Overall: Excellent book, highly recommended.

Not for the non-expert

I took the class under this author and this book was the required textbook. I had some background in numerical methods, but this book does not lead you to the advanced topics starting from the basics. It seems to jump to very specific topics directly, with no apparent progression. I did not find the book very useful, due to my limited background. If you are an expert in these topics, you might find it good as a quick reference.

In my view, the applications are the strength of the text and the reasons why I use this particular text. The students like them too and often comment on them in class.

My overall opinion of the text is that is does a good job of addressing the concepts that I would like to see in an intermediate level text. I primarily like the way the text begins with a discussion of what economic models are, and then flows into the various models from there.

My overall impression is that Nicholson is the best text in the field. There are two themes in Nicholson. First, the text is a study of how economists study markets and, second, the text uses many applications to show the usefulness of the theory. He gets to the essential theory without elegant mathematical models. All of this is in keeping with my approach to the course.

About the Author
Walter Nicholson is the Ward H. Patton Emeritus Professor of Economics at Amherst College and a visiting professor at Ave Maria University, Naples, Florida. Over his teaching career, Professor Nicholson has sought to develop in students an appreciation for the value of economic models in the study of important social questions. He also has enjoyed showing students some of the stranger things that economists have sought to model. Nicholson received his PhD in economics from MIT. Most of his research is in the area of labor economics, especially policy questions related to unemployment.

For a textbook, this one was very well organized and had an easy flow in reading. Best economics related book I have read. It did, though, have some minor spelling and grammar mistakes though.

The Anatomy of a Great Team

On paper, the 1969 New York Mets appeared to be a mediocre team, at best. Their shortstop and second baseman were skinny little guys who barely hit their weight. Their first baseman was a cast off from the Pirates; a guy with power, but who struck out too much. Their right fielder was an erratic player, offensively and defensively; every play was an adventure for Ron Swoboda.

What the casual observer might not have realized is the Mets' pitching staff was about to come into its own; guys like Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Gary Gentry, and Nolan Ryan had tons of talent which would manifest itself in a trip to the World Series and a stunning upset of the highly favored Baltimore Orioles. The entire baseball world was amazed; and the Orioles were shaking their heads after falling to those Amazin' Mets in five games.

Of course, what the Mets were able to achieve, as a team, far exceeded their "individual" expectations; and the rest is baseball history.

The qualities which every leader needs to know to produce a winning team are packaged nicely in this wonderful book. It's written in the typically pragmatic Maxwell style---direct and engaging. After reading it, you'll realize you knew everything he said; but then you'll realize everything he said is rarely achieved.

Throughout history, the great leaders---from Alexander the Great to Winston Churchill---were able to rally their followers to accomplish remarkable feats. Looking back on it, the stubborn persistence of an entire country during a ferocious attack by Nazi Germany, helped turn the tide in World War II. Churchill's courageous demeanor during those trying times helped spark a nation's survival; and destined him for greatness. That's a team effort of magnificent proportion.

For any leader of any organization to truly understand what it takes to succeed, look no further than this book. Read it, and put into practice these critical fundamentals; you'll more than likely produce stunning results. It's really just that simple.

The title of this book is correct, not that there are 101 ideas about teamwork, but rather this is an introductory class into teamwork. Maxwell says as much in his introduction—this is a gathering of ideas from his other books and is not meant for in-depth discussion. What remains is “there’s no I in teamwork” type of conversation. It’s okay, but doesn’t offer a lot of traction.

The main takeaways I received from this book are: stay humble, do things together, build trust, communicate, and empower others. Aside from the small amount of related stories, there’s not much more to this book.

The largest point of contention I have with this book is the treatment of unproductive team members. My personal philosophy is that everyone has something to contribute or that they are passionate about. Sometimes we may not have an option to get rid of unproductive team members, as Maxwell clearly advocates. I understand his point of drag and the power of negative energy, but it seems that more modern business books deal with this in a more effective manner than compared with offing the member from your team.

Overall, this is a quick read and can refocus you on the value of teamwork. It’s not groundbreaking, nor as inspiring as some of its other business counterparts. Maxwell is a great author, but this book seemed more like a cheap way to grab shelf space.

Excellent Book on Leadership!

This is an excellent book on leadership, one that all leaders should read and follow!

The points that John cover in this book are critical in all leaders and teams such as developing a team that lasts, creating positive energy on the team and harnessing the team's creativity.

John uses short sections and gives stories in the book to really drive these points home. Short and to the point!

I also love that this book is small in shape which allows me to keep it in the pocket of my briefcase and re-read sections whenever I have some downtime. I highly recommend this book for all leaders, managers and team members.
