In Carlton Mellick III's fourteenth bizarro novel, The Haunted Vagina, the reader is presented with another Mellickian mind-bending concept--what if your girlfriend's vagina was a gateway to another world? We are introduced to Steve and his girlfriend Stacy, whose "haunted" vagina is a problem for their sex life. When a skeleton-like creature emerges from Stacy's vagina, the two decide to explore what may be inside of her.

When Steve explores (and becomes trapped in) Stacy's vaginal world, he reflects upon his relationship with her. Mellick makes it obvious through clear dialogue and abstract imagery that their relationship is not healthy. Despite these strange occurrences and relationship problems, Steve remains hopelessly devoted to Stacy. This love is the basis for Mellick's return to a common theme: the power, figuratively and literally, a women's vagina can hold over a man.

The joys and terrors that Steve finds in the vagina reflect his relationship with Stacy. The power and trust struggles are seen from inside both characters--inside Steve, who is the narrator of the story, and from literally inside Stacy. This allows the reader a uniquely personal viewpoint of Steve and Stacy's downward spiral as lovers.

Mellick has made a name for himself by writing consistently engaging, strange, and downright weird stories. His characters can sometimes get lost in the weirdness. The Haunted Vagina is not really about the hallucinogenic world Steve finds inside Stacy; it is about the characters themselves. Their doubts and fears fuel the plot.

Fan's looking only for Mellick's hardcore gore and extremely bizarre imagery may be disappointed, as this book is more subtle than its predecessors. Don't be mistaken: this is still very much a horror book that explores the vagaries and dangers of lust, love and obsession. In this Bizarro novel, Mellick illustrates the human condition better than many authors of "realism."

Despite having dealt with similar themes before (e.g. Razor Wire Pubic Hair and The Steel Breakfast Era), this is Mellick's most mature and effective representation of men's sexual fears. His sparse style paints an intimate portrait of Steve and Stacy's relationship. The Haunted Vagina deserves attention; it's among Mellick's very best.

Probably not for fans of The Princess Bride

If you're a hopeless romantic and you love stories that feature charismatic and likable people who discover meaning in each other, it might be very easy to look at the cutesy-weird cover of this book and read its quirky-strange description and even read the "Look Inside" preview and come away thinking that this is a somewhat freakier, naughtier version of the kind of stories you like. My suspicion is that in that case, you'll be disappointed.

This is a wacky story from page one, establishing its offbeat sensibilities when the narrator gushes over with adoration for his girlfriend but admits that his devotion is tested by the haunted quality of her vagina. What you won't get from the cover, the summary, or the preview, though, is a sense of how dark the story will turn as the narration progresses. It never loses its sense of whimsy, and I hate spoilers, so I won't say whether or not the tone swings back up at the end. But I would characterize it as a horror story with elements of romantic comedy, not a romantic comedy built around a horror-story concept.

It is also NOT erotica or pornography, despite some very graphic (and insanely bizarre) sex scenes.

With those caveats, if you like stories with rich characterization that explore serious issues in human relationships, and if you also like wildly inventive fantastical worlds, and if you don't mind some darkness and some explicit and peculiar bedroom scenes, you'll probably end up finding this worthwhile. Be prepared, though, to reassess your opinions of the situation and the characters several times throughout the book. Mellick intentionally keeps the reader guessing, and if you don't buy into that, you might get blindsided.

In a nutshell, The Haunted Vagina is relentlessly inventive, thoroughly unpredictable, occasionally gut-wrenching, and at times a straight-out hoot. For those whose tastes are eclectic, I recommend it. To those who like things conventional, I would suggest looking elsewhere (although I suspect that not many people who fit that description are even reading this review).

Footnote: I read this book twice in the space of two or three days. It's an easy, breezy read, and I wanted to go back and see if some of the later elements of the story were foreshadowed in the earlier parts. It held up really well on a second reading, and the care with which the story was constructed impressed me.

Absolutely Stunning first intro into Mr. Mellick's Universe

This book is my first introduction into the mind of one Mr. Carlton Mellick III. This story is short and quick but doesn't leave any unanswered questions. From the beginning, our main character is a man who declares his love for this quirky chic named Stacey. Stacey, for lack of a better term is rather harsh in her emotions and selfish in her endeavors and for whatever reason our guy falls for her and hard. Despite lack of sex and a terrifying phobia of Stacey's vagina (rightfully so with noises, crying, and wailing coming from within the fleshy cave one can not blame him for his reservations)but when a skeleton decides to climb his way out of Stacey's special place, she now convinces our sorry sap to climb inside her and take a look around. This is NOT an easy feat. Coming from a chick with a vagina, a normal one as far as I know, fisting is a hard enough sexual act, so after being lubed up, shaved down and shoved in, our lil buddy is on his way into the world that lives within Stacey (is final push in by Stacey reminded very much of the South Park episode with Paris Hilton...) I absolutely love the world inside her. The description Mellick gives of the village and the people is of warped awesomeness. The "imaginary" ghost girl of Stacey that resides within her exudes adorable childlike wonderment and her character is by far one of my favorites. She is simple and matter of fact in her actions and love for the main character. The main character however only wants to be released from within Stacey and out into her arms, but this is not to be. Once he is trapped by Fig, it is only a matter of time before he begins to change and become more like the creature of Fig. Eventually he returns Fig's love after being left behind by Stacey. Their love grows and grows and he realizes that Stacey though he loved her, he now belongs with Fig and is happier with her than he was ever with Stacey. I am not a sappy person for the most part, and love stories are just shit to me, this story is the perfect love story if I were to ever fall in love with one (HA!)

Mellick's explanation of how the world became to be is rather intriguing and oddly beautiful. His explanation for their existence can be summed on as an incredibly odd STD lol. I liked the story a lot, I fell in love with the cover art, and I am pleased to know this author has lots more work for me to delve into.

Fun read!

Man, what a great title! This was the first Carlton Mellick book I read and I was not disappointed. While this book definitely has absurd themes and events (like crawling through a vagina as a portal to another world), it was easily readable and had a coherent plot. It's pretty short and can be read in one sitting, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would say the Kindle edition is well worth the price.

I was interested in getting into Bizzaro literature to get fresh inspiration for my own writing. If you're looking to be inspired and read something different, I'd recommend this book. Apes*** is next on my Mellick reading list.

IL TANTO ATTESO RITORNO DI LESTAT

Quando Anne Rice annunci� l'uscita di un nuovo capitolo delle Cronache dei Vampiri con protagonista il mio amato Lestat, non stavo pi� nella pelle, e appena fu possibile pre-ordinarlo, lo feci immediatamente su amazon.
Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi, ed evitai a priori di leggere tutti i post e le recensioni che venivano pubblicate perch� non volevo sciuparmi la sorpresa; fu frustrante, perch� seguendo la stessa autrice su facebook, mi sono vista costretta a non commentare i suoi post quando chiedeva di questo libro, perch� ancora non lo avevo letto.
Adesso che l'ho finito, posso dire che l'ho amato. Ci sono stati dei punti in cui mi sono dovuta concentrare e ricordare gli eventi che erano stati narrati negli altri libri, sono passati diversi anni dalle mie letture della Regina dei dannati, Memnoch il Diavolo, Intervista con il vampiro;quindi ai nuovi lettori consiglio, prima di leggere Prince Lestat, leggetevi tutta la Cronologia dei Vampiri, perch� altrimenti non capirete le caratteristiche ed il carattere dei personaggi.
La prima cosa che mi ha colpito appena ho aperto il libro, � stato introdotto un vocabolario della terminologia usata nel mondo degli immortali, che ho trovato affascinante e ben pensato. Come ho trovato ben pensato, la lista dei nomi alla fine del libro, come se si volesse dare una vera e propria cronologia degli eventi, fare un censimento, infatti vi leggiamo i nomi dei vampiri e quando sono nati ed i nomi dei “novizi”(fledgling), mettendoli quindi, nell'esatto periodo storico,ed ho trovato questa idea brillante, perch�, parliamo di Prince Lestat, e la prima cosa che un Principe o un Re dovrebbe fare alla nascita di un nuovo impero, � proprio un censimento dei propri sudditi.
Come per la Regina dei Dannati, in questo libro sentiamo le voci di ogni singolo protagonista e quindi riceviamo un update di quello che ogni singolo personaggio della Cronologia ha fatto nel nuovo millennio, come, si � adeguato al nuovo millennio, dobbiamo infatti ricordarci, che ci sono immortali che hanno la veranda et� di pi� di 2000 anni.
Ci sono nuovi immortali che non abbiamo mai sentito e c'� questa misteriosa Voce, che si insinua nelle menti dei vampiri e li spinge a distruggere i pi� giovani e c'� Lestat, il nostro Brat Prince, che ha scelto di vivere un periodo in isolamento nel castello della sua giovent�, dove viveva come un giovane aristocratico senza un soldo, prima che fosse “violentato” e forzato dal suo maker Magnus al Dono Oscuro, che improvvisamente viene da tutti scelto come colui che salver� questa nuova crisi,per il suo passato da rockstar, per essere stato colui che ha risvegliato Akasha dal sonno eterno, che sfid� tutti i vampiri del globo, ad uscire fuori dalle tenebre e mostrarsi; ed eletto Principe, ancor prima di chiedere il suo consenso.
Il nuovo millennio � il millennio di scoperte scientifiche e la Rice, mette questi millenari immortali, nella luce delle nuove scoperte,infatti incontriamo subito un medico, Fareed, portato nel sangue da uno dei pi� anziani: Seth, che porter� molte novit� nella storia.
C'� Benji, uno degli immortali pi� giovani, portato ne sangue all'et� di 12 anni, ma leggendo il suo personaggio ho avuto l'impressione che fosse un adulto, non un adolescente; e rappresenta la societ� di oggi appieno con il suo continuo broadcasting dal Trinity Palace,il suo continuo appellarsi agli anziani che si prendano le loro responsabilit� e intervengano in questa ennesima crisi attraverso la sua internet radio.
Ogni singolo immortale in questo libro, fa i conti con la propria coscienza e colei che istiga i conflitti interiori nella maggior parte degli “anziani” e soprattutto in Lestat, � proprio la Voce. Questa Voce l'ho trovata affascinante, perch� la sento in molti punti del libro, come una specie di Coscienza Universale, una entit� che come tutte le entit�, desidera crescere, conoscere, evolversi ma che � intrappolata in un corpo che non ha il minimo interesse di evolversi. Inizialmente ho odiato la Voce, ma via via che proseguivo nella lettura ho iniziato ad amarla e capirla.
Un altro personaggio che ho amato in questo capitolo delle Cronache, � Rose, la prediletta di Lestat dopo Louis, colei che Lestat ha salvato da un catastrofico terremoto nel Mediterraneo, ho amato l'innocenza di questo piccolo fiore, che come tutti gli innocenti, ha avuto una vita drammatica e difficile,� stata vittima di ingiustizie, violenza e cattiveria che la rendono ancora pi� speciale.
Devo dire che questo, pi� di altri libri, mi ha lasciato con un agonizzante senso di vuoto dentro quando sono arrivata all'ultima pagina, perch� ho vissuto con ogni personaggio, e come succede spesso, quando vivi con dei personaggi a lungo, quando questi prendono una pausa da te, ne senti immediatamente la mancanza.
Lo stile � tipico della Rice, descrittivo, visuale, ipnotico. Man mano che leggi sei lanciata in quel mondo e vivi all'interno di esso. Cosa chiedere di pi� ad un autore, se riesce gi� a creare questa bellissima magia? Adesso non mi rimane altro che aspettare il sequel, per vedere se il mio intuito avr� visto giusto, oppure no.

A childish grudge and the far reaching consequences...

This was a very interesting stepbrother romance with a slightly different twist. In this case Slade was a total bad boy who used his stepsister as revenge against his own father...but then left home to become...gasp...a doctor.
You would think that becoming a healer and taking an oath to take care of people would change the manwhore...but nope, that would be too easy.
When stepsister Iris is forced to put their shady and very steamy past behind her for a greater good and sets out to find him, the only person she believes is able to save her younger brother's life, will Slade's feelings for her be enough to convince him to help or will he prove himself to be the biggest jerk in the world.
I really enjoyed this fast paced and biting story about a childish grudge gone bad and the far reaching consequences of one man's selfish actions. It was as emotionally sad as it was sexually charged...Slade and Iris had an off-the-charts chemistry and I was very pleased with the end result of their mutual desire to set things right.

When the truth hits you in the face

I had read another book by this author for review this was included in that read. I have to say you are for an real treat. This is a stepbrother book. Yip, as you would hope some really hot and steamy parts as well. Such a great book.

Slade Jarvis had a lot of bitterness toward his dad. He spent more time hating him instead of just talking out what he was feeling. He was arrogant, rebellious, and oh so handsome. He had a thing for his stepsister though he would not admit his true reasoning behind it. He kept telling himself that he was just using her to hurt his father.

Iris Walker was so in love with her stepbrother. At first she believed that he loved her and would never truly hurt her. She never would of dreamed he would of used her the way he did. It hurt more then she would of like to admit.

Seven long years later and Iris finds herself having to go find her stepbrother. She had hoped he was out of her life for good but her younger brother Kellan is in some serious trouble. It is life or death and Iris feels only Slade can truly help.

I found it surprising that Slade grew up to be a doctor. All the women including nurses were attracted to him. He was one that never allowed himself to get close. When women became clingy he cut all ties. Slade had some pretty deep inward scares. He has a lot of growing up and healing that needs to take place before he can truly help those that truly need him.

This makes the 3rd book I have read of this author. Yesterday I sit down and read 3 book from this author and I found it hard to put down each book. She truly has a talent when it comes to writing. You never know where the story is going to take you.

Not a dull moment

Slade plus bonus book Kellan reviews. You might think "another step brother book?" But it was a great story with sexy Dr. Slade after letting his anger at his father take over his good judgement he uses and ditches his stepsister. We're his feelings real? After giving her brother her virginity falling in love with him and becoming his sexy wildcat she is devastated by what he does. 7 years later their little brother is in trouble and Slade is the only one that can help. Can he let go of his pride and come back to what he has spent years trying to forget, can he save his brother, will Iris ever forgive him for what he did? Like I said there was never a dull moment with this one I read it straight through. Then we are given the gift of Kellan the little brothers story. After surviving an overdose and returning from his time in the military Kellan forced Into underground fighting to make a living. A steamy romance ensues with a reporter trying for a big story. A whirlwind of a fall into love in this one, interesting storyline involving military, politics and the seedy underbelly we often don't think about. Win win with this twofer.

A Fascinating Peek Inside

Ms. Mastromonaco, the Obama White House deputy most likely to regale the staff with “The Jackal,” has written a political memoir – slash – thriller. Will she even survive her absolutely draining stint as PBO’s aide-de-camp? I worried that the last page would just be whatever letters were in the center of her keyboard when her poor forehead came crashing down.

Which is merely to say that Ms. Mastromonaco does an excellent job of telling civilians about the stress and adrenaline levels of working in the White House. (At least back when people were keen to do a good job for the citizens of America.) From getting POTUS and entourage a second plane in case of an Iraqi sandstorm, or making sure the U.S. Secret agents were allowed to bring their weapons into South Africa, Ms. Mastromonaco got the job done.

One might, simply out of feminist reflex, flinch each time the author mentions that she cried. The underlying culprits were usually exhaustion or physical issues. However, when one considers the grim souls currently stalking the west wing, one remembers to appreciate the fact that she has a human, beating heart, and that she had the emotional capacity to actually care.

I suspect privacy rules & regs forced the author to limit the PBO anecdotes. The former president’s playful attempts at matchmaking for Ms. Mastromonaco caught me by surprise; the ultra-rational regimen of salmon and brown rice (even while campaigning) did not. But he seems to have been just like all non-disturbed people saw him to be – an extraordinarily decent, bright, hardworking man. A man who, while carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, took time to call a grieving Ms. Mastromonaco and offer her words of comfort from Air Force One. Just as, I believe history will confirm, the nation was lucky to have him, Obama was lucky to have Ms. Mastromonaco.

I saw Alyssa's interview on Charlie Rose and immediately was intrigued to read her memoir. Downloaded it on Kindle and once I started it, I was riveted and wanted to keep reading it. Although, older than her target audience, I thoroughly enjoyed her advice and insights on how to get a job in politics, and how as a woman to advance in a lot of predominately male work environments. I would have liked more anecdotes about her job and the Obama administration. I also found her timeline jumping around a little disconcerting as she targeted the outline of the book around things she learned from life and her job. But overall, I found it an enjoyable read.

Really interesting, easy and fun read!

Really interesting, easy and fun read! You don't have to be into politics, it also doesn't matter what party you belong to...This book provides some insightful information into the world of women in the Washington arena as well as the Obama administration. I don't have much free time for book reading nor do I actually love reading books. I heard about it from a good friend of mine who was raving about it and gave it a try. I recommend it...worth your time :)

About the Author
Michigan native Lawrence (Larry) Connor departed Michigan State University upon completion of his Ph.D. dissertation on strawberry pollination when he assumed the position of extension apicultural entomologist at The Ohio State University (Columbus). He established Genetic Systems, Inc., Dadant Starline and Midnite hybrid queen program to Florida. In 1980 he formed a private educational firm and has worked as a publisher of bee books since 1988, having edited and published 15 titles and 3 beekeeping journals. He co-edited Asian Apiculture and Beekeeping in the 21st Century. He is the author of many slide sets, magazine articles, a video series, and Increase Essentials (2006). A monthly contributor to Bee Culture Magazine, Connor is the sole owner of Wicwas Press. He continues his work in bee photography and lecturing on apicultural subjects.

Detailed information on making splits and maintaining healthy hives

Great for second year in beekeeping

I don't think this would have been of interest to me last year, but I'm in my second year of beekeeping and this book is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to learn how to make nucs and splits from my own hives so I can go into winter with extra bees instead of ordering package bees in spring to replace deadouts. I had been gathering information from other books and the Beesource forums, but this book is much more comprehensive. I think that the information in this book will help me improve my stock and become a better beekeeper.
