She was named a Professor Emerita of Law in 2000. Beginning in 1996, she began to focus on professional communication. Professor Cooper is the principal of Professional Presence®, a professional communication consulting company. Her most recent communication book is How to Build a Law Firm Brand (ABA 2005), an e-book, also incorporated into How to Capture and Keep Clients, a book from the ABA on marketing. Her most recent scholarly work is Attorney Liability in Bankruptcy (ABA 2006), which focuses on attorney liability under the new Bankruptcy Reform Act. A widely-recognized work, "Letter to a Young Law Student," is an anthropological study of the first year of law school. Great resource for any family law attorney who gets any ...

Great resource for any family law attorney who gets any military client. If you work in a town close to a military installation, it's a must. If you get a client who has any military benefits that could possibly be subject to division, save yourself (and your client) several (billable) hours of research and just get a copy. I've been a military attorney for over 10 years now, and I bought this because frankly, it's the Bible of military divorce. I'm very familiar with retirement and separation entitlements, but this book helped me make better sense of even my own benefits. It covers everything from SCRA, USFPA, DFAS requirements, transitional TRICARE, SDP and TSP division rules, SBP issues, and more.

**Professional recommendation: if you're in private practice and you have a military or former military client (particularly retirees) and you can't identify ALL of those acronyms, click "Buy Now" immediately and take a huge step toward preventing your own future malpractice.**

Great book for the layman and the attorney

If you're going through a military divorce and looking for an attorney, you should get one who knows of and has this book. It's the "bible" of military divorce. I'm not an attorney--I'm a military spouse going through a military divorce and I bought this book for myself (the book is just as valuable to the service member). Like another reviewer said, it's a bit pricey, but when you consider how much time you're being charged by your attorney and how many thousands of dollars are at stake, it's well worth the money. When you're done with it, you can share this valuable book with any friends who may need it or you can donate it to a library (better yet, a library on a military base).

If you're a non-lawyer, some parts may be a bit over your head as far as the legalese goes, but at least you'll know what issues about which you need to ask your attorney and make sure he is aware of. While this book does cite precedent (cases) from various states around the country, it is not a book that details individual state law. If you want a book on divorce law in general for whichever state in which you file, you'll have to find it elsewhere. However, this book will spell out your options regarding in which state you wish to file (military members have more options on choosing the state--the state in which one is stationed, where the spouse is living, home of record, etc.).

It's a great book and I am very happy to have found it. Thank you to the authors for writing it. To all the service members and their families who need it--good luck, God bless, and thanks you *all* for your service.

The Holy Grail for Attorneys Handling Military Divorces

I practice law in an area heavily populated with active duty members of the United States military, as well as retired military servicemembers. Accordingly, in about 50% of the divorces I handle, there is an issue related to the military. The Military Divorce Handbook is my go-to. As no situation is the same, I find myself referring to this handbook often to make sure I am giving my clients accurate advice. It has never steered me wrong.

Also, a few years ago, I attended a CLE presentation by Mark Sullivan. He is the most knowledgeable in his field. This book allows attorneys to tap into that resource directly.

This will not teach you how to program with RobotC

Let me start by saying that I am very impressed that Alex Crow wrote this tech report at 15 years old. It is better than the senior project reports I've seen from some undergraduate engineering students. But, at the end of the day, it is just a tech report...and a flawed one at that.

I purchased this book because I realize that, as someone who has been a practicing computer engineer for several decades, I don't always recognize the things I take for granted that the members of the VEX robotics team I am mentoring don't know. I thought that a book written by a student participant in a high school robotics competition might give me some insight into things I should address with our team. Sadly, this book doesn't do that.

This book also doesn't do what the title and the description say it does. A person will not learn to program with RobotC using this book. In fact, in the introduction, Alex states that "We developed this book as an introduction to the whole process, so it is not really a detailed programming tutorial. There are other resources kids can use to learn about the features of RobotC, for example."

So, what does this book cover? After the three page introduction (and some extraneous blank pages...that you ARE paying for), Alex spends the next 18 pages defining and describing the Software Development Lifecycle. Now, as a certified software engineer, I can appreciate the value of a good software engineering process, but the waterfall lifecycle and the formal steps (like design reviews with the customer) described in the book only makes sense if you are working in the defense or aerospace industries. A robotics team (and most startups) will use an agile development process - which is not what is discussed in this section. There are also some really bad examples in this section, like the following example of "good comments" for setting a variable:

// Set motor power to a value of 30.
int motorPower = 30;

A good comment should say what the "magic number" of 30 is and why it is being set to that value, not just parrot the code. The funny part is, this example comes right after a description of using #define to define a constant. This would have been an ideal place to use a constant, with some descriptive comments to explain what the constant is and why it is being used.

The next 27 pages of the book describe the robot Alex's robot team built for the 2013 FTC RING IT UP competition, in the context of the software development lifecycle described in the first chapter of the book. Unfortunately, there is not much description of the design process or the tradeoffs and design decision the team went through in building and programming their robot. 19 of the 27 pages are code listings...for an incomplete version of the code. And there are some poor examples here, as well. For example, the code points out that the range of values from the joystick are -127 to 127, but the motor speeds are only -100 to 100. Since the joystick values are being mapped directly to the motor speeds, Alex wrote 6 lines of if-then-else statements to limit the joystick values to +100 or -100. This means that nearly one quarter of the joystick range is being ignored in both the positive and negative directions. Any engineer who has worked with mapping sensor or control inputs to an actuator output could tell you that the correct way to do it would be to scale the input to the output - and this could be done with one line of code:

return ((joyValue / 127) * 100) // scale joystick inputs of -127 to 127 to maximum motor speeds of -100 to 100

Some other poor programming examples in this section include not explaining why the robot code all runs inside of an infinite loop (the common method of robot programming where you constantly go through a cycle of polling sensors and control inputs and using these values to set actuator outputs until the robot is shut off or an exception condition is used to terminate the program), not explaining that the #pragma compiler directives need to be created by the RobotC robot configuration utility (a critical element of using the RobotC development environment, since it autogenerates the pragmas), and casting integer literals to floats in calculations instead of just using a floating point literal.

I really wish I could recommend this book. I am in awe of the work that Alex has done - I doubt I could have written a tech report this thorough at the age of 15. But, in the end, it is just a 61 page tech report (and nearly half of the pages are code listings). It is not worth the $14.95 retail price.

This book helped me a lot

I really am glad that I purchased this book! I was intimidated at starting robotics at my school because it seemed so difficult. I bought this book for a little extra help, and it really helped me catch on quickly! It's loaded with helpful information; such as designing and development along with learning the language. Highly recommend!

Balancing sleep and work? Read this!

“How to Stay Awake” by Luke Norton does exactly what it says on the tin, so to speak. I got hold of this book while I was struggling to balance studying for my business exams and getting enough sleep, so I went onto Amazon and looked for something that would help me. At first I thought that “How to Stay Awake” might be too short – I mean, I thought how much could you over in only 8 pages? – but, you know what? It contains all the necessary hints and tips – like a “manage your sleep” handbook – without getting too in depth to the extent where it’d become boring. Instead, what we have here in “How to Stay Awake” is a kind of mini bible, with essential tips such as surviving a cram session, avoiding falling asleep at work, driving while fatigued and working a night shift. Norton really knows his stuff and this is one book that I will refer to again and again. Recommended!

this book is very handy because im only ten and ofcourse want to stay up all night in my fort so i came across this book and itried what the book said and i go to bed at 9 p.m and end up staying up until 12:45 instead of 10:00. i followed the instructions and i have a mini fridge in my fort/clubhouse full of fruit and water. and instead of sleeping on my ine of my clubhouse ten beds i sleep on the floor. and when i was traveling to washington last summer with my brother step sister dad and stepmom i showed my stepmom the book ( my dad does not have his licenes) i nstead of driving all night she would stop at reststop's and she was SO much happier and less grouchy in the morning. i would like to thank the authour of this book and i hope whoever is thinking about reading this book reads my reveiw and changes their mind if they said no.

Author Luke W. Norton does a thorough job of enlightening readers on techniques to stay awake on those occasions when they may need to. I found it to be a real eye-opener, as it went beyond the logical methods that we all tend to think we should take when getting sleep isn't an option. What I enjoyed most about the book was that it didn't necessarily promote taking medication, prescribed or otherwise. The emphasis was placed on utilizing authentic strategies which would enable a person to naturally and organically drift into a state of slumber. I’d have to give this book a thumbs up as a recommended read for sure.

About the Author
Maggie Johnson is a speech and language therapist and educational consultant specialising in childhood communication disorders and selective mutism. With thirty years' experience in education and community settings, Maggie works closely with families and schools in East Kent and provides training and workshops for schools, parents and health professionals across the UK and abroad. She lives in Ramsgate, UK. Alison Wintgens�was�a consultant speech and language therapist�in child and adolescent mental health based at St George's Hospital until her retirement in July 2011.�She�has worked for�over 20 years with children who have selective mutism and lives in London. Now she�continues to write and teach, and�is the advisor on selective mutism to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. Maggie and Alison have both published extensively in the field of speech and language therapy and�are advisors to the Selective Mutism Information and Research Association. Robyn Gallow's illustrations have been used in�a number of educational titles. She lives in London, and is involved in both fashion and illustrating.

Great book for a frequently misunderstood childhood issue

I am very happy with this book, it gives a starting point for understanding Selective Mutism, which is a very complex condition. Gives a few tips regarding how family, friends and teachers can help; the book is short and simple, and can be understood by children. Why not five stars? because if you want to learn what Selective Mutism is really like, you have to look into other sources too. Don't stay with just with this book, it is just a great starting point.

My 4 year old grandson has this problem. I had never heard of it. This book is excellent in helping to understand it and be able to explain it to others. It is an easy,quick read but full of helpful information on what to do or not do to make the child even more uncomfortable.

I think it will be good resource for my child's teachers because it will provide just the right level of detail for a busy classroom teacher. Great Read

I love this whole series . Each book is better than the last.
I especially love an author who isn't afraid to do the unexpected.
Monroe and Drea's story is ful of ups and downs,but they get their HEA. Bonus- You get to see plenty of the other characters from previos books!

I'm giving this book four stars mainly because the author does a good job of portraying the loneliness and desperation which lead the characters down their chosen paths. Even the city they live in seems to be a living, breathing character in this book as it too is trying to find it's way back to more profitable times. As far as Monroe and Drea as a couple goes, I thought they were alright but I didn't feel like their story was particularly romantic. It was more like two lonely people spending time together so they wouldn't be as lonley. Still, I rooted for them to be together at the end. As I've said with the previous books in this series, I feel like the members of Nightshade should have been able to figure out some of the things going on long before they did. Seems they all have gut feelings about things but none of them ever follow up on those feelings! I do like that not everything gets wrapped up by the end of each book. There are still some questions left unanswered so that you know there has to be another book in the series. I know most people hate that but I like having that anticipation for the next book to find the answers..

Narcolepsy Doctor needed!

Read all the books in the Nightshade series, have some issue with the books but i've read them none the less and enjoyed them. I've waited for Monroe's story wanted so much to get into his life, past books left me wanting more Monroe! loved him. Then we finally get his story and it was so disappointing and boring! nothing exciting happens. Drea has narcolepsy I kid you not the women slept in every chapter! That's how she copes with stress, through the whole book she's napping, about to take a nap,thinking about a nap, talking about how she should take a nap. Monroe takes her on a weekend trip not five mintues at the cabin they start to argue and you guessed it the girl gets stress and needs a nap. What she really needed was a doctor to deal with the issue, Drea was a little badass in the last book she killed her father and brother. I have no idea who this sleeping woman is in the story and Monroe just helped with napping. Not the hero I wanted to read about.

Daniele Teti is a software architect, trainer, and consultant with over 18 years of professional experience. He writes code in a number of languages but his preferred language to compile native software is Object Pascal. Daniele is a well-known Delphi and programming expert in the developer community. He's the main developer and drives the development of some Delphi open source projects (DelphiMVCFramework; DORM, "the Delphi ORM"; Delphi Redis Client; and so on). He wrote his first program when he was 11 years old, and since then, he happily continues to write software almost every day. Apart from Delphi, he's a huge fan of design patterns, expert systems, RESTful architectures, and Android OS. When he is not busy writing software or programming (as his job or hobby), he likes to play the guitar, write songs, and do voluntary activities. this book is a nice refresher as well as a way to catch up ...

For all those who have not worked with Delphi for a long time or for those who have been stuck with older versions of Delphi, this book is a nice refresher as well as a way to catch up on new features and capabilities. For people new to Delphi, it is a great overview of what is possible with the more recent versions of this fantastic product.

The format and presentation as a cookbook makes it particularly useful as a reference book, also considering the fact that the concepts and examples are directly related to real world situations. The book can certainly be used as a starting point for various projects. The vast experience of the author is clearly visible behind all this.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the presence of all those links to reference material to go deeper into all the topics that were presented. A great added value.

Overall, a very good book that I highly recommend.

Wide material, something to learn for everyone

Covers an amazingly wide variety of topics, with examples that show a lot more than just the nominal subject. It shows 'modern Delphi' - the 2014 environment and language and capabilities. There's something in here even for experienced Delphi programmers, but if you haven't used Delphi for a long time, read it to get a great overview of the state of the language. If you're new to Delphi and need to learn, this book will cover the entire environment, and you'll be up to speed with a good general knowledge of the development environment quickly.

Some of the post-recipe discussion could have more detail.

A good mix of recipes

Before proceeding with my review, you may want to read this other review by Simon J Stuart which provides a good overview of what you can find in the book. I also received a review copy from the publisher, and I’m glad I requested one!

Overall impression

The book uses a great pattern, where a topic is introduced, code is shown to demonstrate it, explanations and observations about the technique are discussed, and suggestions for additional usage or other resources are provided. This “explore more” section of the book may actually be its most valuable part, because Daniele provides specific links that point to good resources to use for each of the recipes covered.

The code examples are useful and as concise as is reasonable.

The order of the book is logical and does a good job of building on some of the previous recipes in later parts of the book:
1.Delphi Basics
2.Become a Delphi Language Ninja
3.Going Cross-Platform with FireMonkey
4.The Thousand Faces of Multithreading
5.Putting Delphi on the Server
6.Riding the Mobile Revolution with FireMonkey
7.Using Specific (mobile) Platform Features

This is a valuable book to keep handy for when you may need to implement any of the techniques it covers. In short, it is exactly what a “cookbook” should be, with quick and reliable recipes to help you create a good solution for a technical issue.

Some specifics

For example, there’s a great, short exploration for taking advantage of generics. Hidden in one of the discussed “higher order” functions for generics (map, reduce/fold, filter) is something that deserves to be called out briefly in the book (although it is not).

This small sample shows one of the cleaner methods of populating a dynamic array result that can subsequently be lifetime managed by the runtime. The TList object is efficient for growing one item at a time. A dynamic array is not. Often, the result for the dynamic array is preallocated to some high bound (in the sample above, it would be the length of the input array), then resized before the return to shrink the array back down to the number of elements matching the filter. By using TList, then freeing it, the array size is only manipulated once and the List.ToArray call makes the code clean and sustainable.

Mobile development with Firemonkey

The book has many detailed and useful examples for mobile development with FireMonkey. This is the section of the book where I learned the most, because I haven’t worked on mobile apps with Delphi. There are many useful tidbits covered in this section that are important for mobile development: using mobile databases, implementing server and client-side functionality, camera and phone manipulation, application lifecycle awareness, and more.

Platform-specific features

The platform-specific features chapter goes beyond mobile FireMonkey recipes to making calls from Delphi to iOS and Android SDK calls, and is an excellent way to wrap up the book.

Other recipes I’d like to see

Some things I think would be good to have in the book are:
•In the UI section: ◦effective use of actions
◦effective use of frames
◦input value validations (form validation)

•in the section on streaming, it would be handy to explore reliable determination of the encoding used by a file.
•for threading, effective use of the new XE7 Parallels library
•for Delphi on the server, ◦how to secure your web application (including using secure CDN resources for jQuery, etc)
◦using dynamic arrays and records for JSON to avoid all the “free” calls for TObjectList (this works very well with SuperObject, for example)

A minor nit

I don’t understand what Daniele means by “bounce” as in: “I see too many business applications that are composed by a bounce of dialog windows.”

Conclusion

Daniele did a great job on this book, and I hope he continues to update it with new recipes in the future.

Specialized in the field of Agricultural Statistics, he has worked in the Central University, North Eastern Hill University, Medziphama Campus; Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India before joining Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya as a faculty member. He has also worked as a guest faculty in the University of Calcutta, IISER, Kolkata. Due to his vast working experience in different agriculture and allied fields, he is aware of the various problems and needs of the students, researchers, and academia in various fields. He has authored four books, served as member of the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Council for Faculty of Agriculture, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, and successfully guided students leading to masters and PhD degree.
