From Library Journal
Management consultant Miller argues that there are seven archetypal management styles, directly linked to the stages of an organization's development. A company is formed by a "prophet," whose vision is actually implemented by a efficient "barbarian." A sign of the company's decline is the hindering presence of a "bureaucrat" or "aristocrat." The innovative twist to Miller's thesis is his "synergist" archetype, the manager who is able to balance these archetypal traits to assure vitality and growth. While all of this is quite interesting, one gets the impression that Miller sees organizational culture as more malleable and dynamic than it historically has been shown to be. Terence E. Deal and Allan A. Kennedy's Corporate Cultures ( LJ 7/82) still remains the most insightful, recently published work on this topic.

Barbarians to Bureaucrats
By Frank Brown
Barbarians to Bureaucrats provides an insightful view of managerial styles but what's more significant is its emphasis on Synergist and the importance of his leadership to the success of his company. The author states "All cultures that succeed do so because of synergy, both within the culture and in interaction with competing cultures. Healthy companies are flexible. That allows them to change. Rigidity prevents change and inevitably leads to decline." Synergistic organizations require unique differences in its leadership team and these differences provide flexibility, creativity, motivation, unity and diversity, as well as other attributes, which follow the Laws of Synergy. I recommend this book as a great guide to the understanding the requirements to a successful enterprise

By James W. Thompson
I first read this book 20 years ago; it was relevant then and it still is today. Miller uses his history background to bring examples of past civilizations that have followed the model interlaced with modern day companies that have done the same. It is a book that every manager and executive should be familiar with in the hope that, armed with Miller's insights, they may be able to help stave off the inevitable progression to aristocracy.

A travelogue disguised as the ending of a fantasy series
By David Roy
I've been a fan of Terry Brooks' Shannara series ever since the first book. The series is both interesting in its own right, yet wrapped in a familiarity that's very pleasant to the fantasy reader. The main knock against the later books in the series is that Brooks' characters tend to be very similar to previous versions. The entire Voyage of the Jerle Shannara series has suffered from this affliction. Not only that, but Brooks seems like he has been treading water with this series. The third and final book, Morgawr, is more of the same: comfortable, yet just a little too familiar. Rabid Brooks fans will definitely love it. Other Brooks fans will find that they enjoyed it, but it left them feeling a little bit empty, like having eaten some Chinese food and feeling hungry a couple of hours later.
The main problem with Morgawr is that it is basically a runaround. The main characters run, the Morgawr and his mwellrats pursue them. Some of the party runs into a monster, some action happens, and it's over. It all builds to a final confrontation that's obvious from the beginning, and it can take forever to get there. Doctor Who fans may be familiar with the "endless corridor" aspect of that show, where it seems like most of the story consists of the characters running back and forth down corridors. This book had much the same feeling, only on a larger scale.
There are also a series of coincidences and other illogical happenings that make the eyes roll. The party regroups in a much too easy way after being separated for so long. They basically run into each other. A few of them are better explained, having been found by Hunter Predd and his roc, a huge bird with very keen eyesight who has been patrolling the area in the air. However, the others are just a chance meeting that strains credulity to the limit. Not only that, but the Ilse Witch wakes from her catatonia in order to heal somebody, and gives Bek a vital clue that he needs, before returning to her catatonic state. The clue makes this happening very important, but I don't really buy the ultimate reasoning for why it happened.
The characters in Morgawr aren't bad, and Brooks has no qualms about killing some of them. This is a very bloody book (series, actually, since it started in the first book). Again, though, the characters are very similar to characters in past Shannara series, and the recognition factor jars. Bek is pretty much the same as previous Ohmsfords, Quenten Leah is like the Leahs of old, with his magic Sword of Leah. The Rovers are, as a group, similar to characters in the previous two series. At least the two main Rovers, Redden Alt Mer and Rue Meridian, are fairly distinctive, and interesting in their own right. This is not to say that the characters aren't interesting, because for the most part they are. I just wish they were different. They're comfortable characters, however, and fans of the series will like them. If this is the first Shannara series you've read, you won't notice this and will probably enjoy them in their own right.
The final problem to mention is Brooks' tendency to have is characters brood. They do this a lot, and the most annoying times are when the characters are in danger, or waiting for danger to come to them. It's not unusual for a character to be on guard, or watching for something to come at them, and spend one or two pages brooding about his or her circumstances, what's happened on this mission, friends who have died, or whatever. For me, it breaks the tension rather than adding to it. I kept saying to myself "would you please stop thinking and just get on with it?" And since the characters are usually brooding about similar things (the events since they arrived here), it also gets a bit repetitious as well.
Still, it is an enjoyable series to read, even more so if you've never read a Shannara book before. Brooks really has a talent for action scenes, and when they happen they are usually exciting. You do care for the characters and they are three-dimensional for the most part. You never know whether a character is safe or not, which also adds to the tension. Brooks kills off quite a number of them. I really enjoyed the finale, as the Morgawr, who has been shown to be much more powerful than any magic Bek or the Ilse Witch have, is defeated by brains rather than "a lucky shot" or something like that.
While I enjoy the Shannara books, and give this one just over 3 stars, part of me wishes Brooks would leave Shannara for awhile, or at least try to do something new with it. The concept of the Jerle Shannara series *is* new, with a voyage across the sea, but he wraps it in too many familiarities for this reader. If this is your first exposure to Brooks, then it's not so bad, and you will be entertained. I guess that's not a bad thing.

A Thrilling Conclusion to the "Voyage" Series
By Jeffrey T. Munson
Terry Brooks has written another masterpiece. This book is truly exciting and left me on edge throughout. In this installment, he focuses on the group of adventurers after the destruction of Antrax, the evil magical force from book two. Druid Walker Boh has been left mortally wounded from his encounter with Antrax, and the Ilse Witch was forced to confront her evil doings by the Sword of Shannara. The Witch, who has finally accepted that she is Grianne Ohmsford, Bek's sister, withdraws deep within herself after seeing the vision in the Sword. She is unable to forgive herself for what she had become and completely shut herself off from everyone, including Bek. However, Bek is determined to break through to her and release her from her trance-like state. Meanwhile, the evil Morgawr, a magical creature thousands of years old and the trainer of the Ilse Witch, has commandeered a fleet of airships to seek out the Witch and destroy her. He will stop at nothing until the Witch is either dead or he has sucked the lifeforce from her. There are many adventures throughout as the Morgawr attemts to capture the Witch and as the group tries to escape. The airship battles are told in vivid detail, as well as the various encounters the group comes upon.
The book is excellent. I could not put it down. It is loaded with action and adventure on every page and left me wanting more. The ending is a real cliff hanger and sets the stage for the next trilogy, which is due to start next year. I highly recommend this book. It is a fitting conclusion to the "Voyage" trilogy.

"Your Time for Regret will be Short..."
By R. M. Fisher
"Morgawr" is the third and last book in Terry Brook's "Voyage of the Jerle Shannara" trilogy, which concerns the last of the triad of villains that the "Jerle Shannara"s crew goes up against. In the previous two books "Ilse Witch" and "Antrax" the Druid Walker led a range of characters to the faraway island of Parkasia in order to find a great treasure trove of ancient knowledge. Stalked by the Ilse Witch and then attacked by the archaic machinery of the Antrax, the crew found themselves utterly divided. Walker has been fatally wounded by the Antrax after unsuccessfully attempting to gain this treasure, but now bids Bek to save the one thing that they can salvage from the mission: the Ilse Witch.

Bek Ohmsford and the mysterious shape-shifter Truls Rokh are attempting to convince the Ilse Witch that she is not only Bek's sister Grianne Ohmsford, but that her mentor the Morgawr was the one that killed her parents - not Walker as she had been led to believe. After the truth is revealed to her by the magic of the Sword of Shannara, she slips into a state of catatonia that Bek cannot awaken her from. Meanwhile, the elf prince Ahren Elessedil and the seer Ryer Ord Star have retrieved the long-lost Elfstones only to find themselves captured by the Morgawr who seeks to use them in the attempt to trap the rest of the crew.

Everyone else is engaged in fairly dull activities: Quentin Leah does a lot of walking, and Rue Meridian, her brother Redder Alt Mer and the Wing Rider Hunter Predd take control of "Black Moclips" only to abandon it in a storm - a needless and pointless plot line. Panax's presence in the story is still a mystery. With the Antrax gone and the Ilse Witch converted, the story basically follows the surviving members of the crew trying to find one another, flee the island and avoid the Morgawr and his crew of reptilian Mwellrets.

The problem with this is that for all intents and purposes, the voyage is over. They came, they looked for the treasure, they didn't actually get the treasure (making the whole trip fairly pointless) and now they're leaving again. There is no sense of moving forward, only going back, and as such it's less interesting. To make things worse, the Morgawr is a rather humdrum bad guy, with nothing of the Ilse Witch's mystery or the Antrax's incorporeal threat. This is just a bad guy that wants to kill the goodies, because that's what bad guys do.

There are more problems: the love story between Bek and Rue is forced and unconvincing, there are more pointless encounters (including a man-eating plant) and it ends on a silly "here we go again" note. There are endless sermons on the nature of love and loyalty, and often the long-winded dialogue that Brooks gives his characters is painfully unnatural and often repetitive: "They fly no flag, and their crews act like dead men...the ones he could see were men, but they didn't act like men. They acted like machines. They didn't look as if they were alive. They were all still and empty-eyed." This sentence could be boiled down to half this length, without making the speaker sound like a robot and the reader like an idiot that has to have the situation pounded into him a number of times.

Neither Ryer nor Truls is given a satisfactory send-off, and the conclusion of the story screams "sequels are coming!" And in fact they are - Brooks continues his story in a new trilogy called "The High Druid". The fact that the treasure itself ended up being inaccessible and the mission switched instead to Grianne, makes the entire thing seem like one big introduction to this next series of books.

It was a promising start, and an interesting middle, but this final book is only worth reading in order to finish what you started --and see if Brooks can bring himself to let just one Elf Hunter (ie, nameless extra crew-member) to survive. Don't count on it.

Developing Wind Power Projects: Theory and Practice, by Tore Wizelius

Wind power is developing rapidly, in terms of both the number of new installations and in interest from stakeholders including policy-makers, NGOs, research scientists, industry and the general public. Unlike the majority of other texts on wind power, which are written primarily for engineers or policy analysts, this book specifically targets those interested in, or planning to develop, wind power projects. Having outlined wind power basics and explained the underlying resource and technology, the author explores the interactions between wind power and society, and the main aspects of project development, including siting, economics and legislation. This book will be an essential reference for professionals developing new sites, government officials and consultants reviewing related applications, and both specialists and non-specialists studying wind power project development.

let the buyer beware, better deals from goodwill online sellers through Amazon. Or at least closely inspect description of book
By Robert D Palmer Jr.
it is ok, dust jacket and book is in pristine condition, however, unlike the other 2 Psalms 16 & 17A the cover on this one is white with no picture of King David playing the Harp, and only an anchor on the cover, it also has on the top pages of book stamped withdrawn & also on the binding the library cataloging number, am I buying this book from an individual or a library? oh we'll, for used book, begars can't be choosers as the old saying would go I would also not that the book is copyrighted 1968, whereas the other 2 are copyrighted 1965, would be giving 5 star rating if not for these 2 minor flaws.

At the start of the twenty-first century, the term "modern art" already has something of a venerable ring to it. It has joined other capacious art historical categories, such as "Renaissance" or "Romanticism," which, though they may usefully serve to give shape to broad contours of art history, become less clear in meaning and more open to dispute the closer you get to detailed discussion of specific works of art. The only difference between these and "modern art" is that modern art as a temporal category is still open-ended: it is, by one definition, simply the art of the present day. But it also includes the early paintings of Matisse and Malevich, Braque's Cubist collages, and the first building designs by Frank Lloyd Wright—products of a world that now feels very distant indeed, separated from us by two world wars, the atomic bomb, and the Internet. The words "modern art" have soaked up so much history that they can never again mean what they once meant (or at least, not with the same heady conviction): shockingly new, bewilderingly progressive, utterly of the present moment, unprecedented-though they still encompass that.

A Short History of History of Modern Art

Just as "modern" is a many-layered term, this book, now in its fifth edition, has a history of its own. As the term "modern art" has broadened and been reinterpreted over time, successive scholars, editors, and specialist contributors have amended and added to Harvey H. Arnason's original text, which Arnason himself fully revised some years after the book was first published in 1969. This has been a process not only of fine-tuning and updating information but also of revisiting much of Arnason's material in the context of a scholarly and educational environment that has changed significantly from the one in which he wrote. There are parallels to this process in other cultural arenas, for example in the reorganization and reinterpretation of museum and gallery displays. The core of the collection remains the same, the objects have the same indelible presence and fascination, but, juxtaposed with new acquisitions and displayed under different lighting conditions, they lead viewers to look at them in different (sometimes very different) ways.

In this sense, while this new edition of History of Modern Art contains much added material, it is still essentially Arnason's creation. This Preface offers a brief investigation into the marathon staying-power of his original endeavor, even through successive revisions have seen the book evolve over the years to take account of new directions in art and art history. After more than three decades and four new editions, Arnason's vision remains the core of this standard work of art historical reference.

The Art of Looking

Arnason was Professor and Chairman of the University of Minnesota's art department from 1947 to 1961, and he had a long association with New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as its Vice President for Art Administration. He embarked on History of Modern Art relatively late in life. The project was conceived and intended as a long-term landmark—the first book of its kind—and it drew on the experience of his distinguished career as an art historian. Two deep-rooted convictions underpin Arnason's History: first, that understanding art is a matter of fundamental importance; second, that the way to learn about art is to look for yourself. His Preface unequivocally emphasized his belief in the importance of the individual's face-to-face experience of art—a belief that, as he saw it, gave the book its rationale and its structure:

The thesis of this book, insofar as it has a thesis, is that in the study of art the only primary evidence is the work of art itself. Everything that has been said about it, even by the artist himself, may be important, but it remains secondary evidence. Everything that we can learn about the environment that produced it historically, socially, culturally is important, but again is only secondary or tertiary evidence. It is for this reason that an effort has been made to reproduce most of the works discussed. For the same reason a large part of the text is concerned with a close analysis of these works of art and with detailed descriptions of them as well. This has been done in the conviction that simple description has an effect in forcing the attention of the spectator on the painting, sculpture, or building itself. If, after studying the object, he disagrees with the commentator, all the better, In the process he has learned something about visual perception.

Encouraging his readers to look at art was Arnason's first objective. But he had a further, more challenging aim in view, which was to get people thinking about what it means to go beyond the realm of words—facts, opinions, descriptions, books (no matter how inspiring or enlightening these may be)—and experience art as a purely visual phenomenon. "The principal emphasis of this book," he wrote,

revolves around the problem of seeing modern art. It is recognized that this involves two not necessarily compatible elements: the visual and the verbal. Any work of art history and/or criticism is inevitably an attempt to translate a visual into a verbal experience. Since the mind is involved in both experiences, there are some points of contact between them. Nevertheless, the two experiences are essentially different and it must always be recognized that the words of the interpreter are at best only an approximation of the visual work of art.

Why does Arnason consider looking at modern art such an important art to master? The valuation that society places on art, and the reasons for that valuation, change with time, and here again, since History of Modern Art first appeared, shifts have occurred in our perception of why art matters.

Experience and Interpretation

The distant roots of Arnason's belief that looking at art is in itself a profoundly worthwhile activity can be traced to the liberal, secular educational ideals of the nineteenth century. These ideals presumed that exposure to the "highest" kind of cultural experiences could make people, whatever their social or ethnic background, better citizens and happier individuals.

More recent generations of scholars and writers have fiercely questioned the foundations of this outlook, but its monuments remain at the center of Western cultural life. The conviction that simply looking at paintings and sculptures, or entering a grandly beautiful building, were necessarily uplifting and "ennobling" experiences was an important factor in the nineteenth-century enthusiasm in Europe and North America for establishing public art collections and opening great private collections to the public. As a scholar working in the orbit of major American collections, Arnason was a direct heir to the tradition of promoting contact with art for the general good. These collections, and later ones founded on their model, still provide the public with their most important point of access to art.

His belief in the power of art to work its own magic in our lives marks Arnason as a man very much of his time and background. Today art has lost none of its cultural glamour, but the role of interpretation is now regarded as not merely helpful for the viewer's own experience but in certain ways essential for it. The idea of art history as a unitary field of knowledge has been replaced by the recognition of diverse art histories, each shaped by a particular interpretative approach. Likewise, the old notion of the canon—a roll-call of indisputable masterpieces that set the standard for all artistic achievement—has given way to a far more inclusive view of what constitute legitimate objects of art historical attention.

These changes have affected the ways in which art is made, viewed, presented, and taught. Textbooks locate art within contemporaneous social, historical, political, and philosophical themes. Museums, too, which at one time were regarded as palaces or temples for the display of self-evidently significant cultural treasures, now see the interpretation of these treasures as an equally important activity, recognizing that any work of art may well mean quite different things to different viewers. To take one obvious example, it is now comfortably accepted, as it would not have been in art history pre-Feminism, that Western art's long preoccupation with the naked female body, in particular the centrality the nude has enjoyed in histories of Western art, does not carry the same messages for women as for men. It is not that we look any more carefully or subtly at art than earlier generations did, only that the range of information regarded as relevant to an understanding (or understandings) of art has been vastly extended.

This new edition, as one would expect, acknowledges interpretative standpoints more openly and, inevitably, more self-consciously that did Arnason's original text. This will be especially evident to the reader in the substantially revised and expanded chapters dealing with art after around 1970, a period during which critical theory and the awareness of multiple interpretations came to inform much art practice.

How Arnason would have interpreted the art of the final quarter of the twentieth century can only be guessed, but he would no doubt have applauded the emphasis on the need for art education to work on a broad front. "It is recognized," he wrote, "that a work of art or architecture cannot exist in a vacuum. It is the product of a total environment—a social and cultural system—with parallels in literature, music, and the other arts, and relations to the philosophy and science of the period." But when he wrote History of Modern Art, you quickly gather, following up these parallels was not his primary concern. The two world wars, the Russian Revolution, the rise of Nazism and the Depression era of the thirt...

I have several big survey-type art books, but this is the best. The pix are great, as you'd expect, but what delights me is how well-written and edited it is. Even though it's a big book, it has to cover a lot of topics, and you can read right along, enjoying the developments, without tripping over the author's use of English. That's getting rare these days.

The only thing I object to is their occasional use of black-and-white photos, especially on pages where they're already printing in color. I guess maybe that saves them a little time when they're proofing the book, but it sure doesn't serve the reader well. With a computer nearby, though it's easy to look up anything they reference, though -- and they mention plenty that they don't have space for, even though the book is almost 2" thick.

This is a fascinating subject, and they present it that way. I had to buy it for a modern-art class, and saved a bunch with a used one.

Bursting for more knowledge.......
By Motte 1
Oh dear me! I feel I must come to this books rescue. I am not an academic nor am I doing any arts courses.

In 2005 I went to New York, with a friend more knowledgable about art than I, to see the Cezanne and Pissarro exhibition at MoMA. When I arrived back in the UK I was bursting for more knowledge and information about modern art in particular. My husband, who IS an academic, went The Barber Institute Library, Birmingham and brought home half a dozen books for me to decide upon. This book was one of them. I bought several, the above in hardback, it is a physically large book. I have never looked back, it was a joy to read and I did read every word. Nor did I feel it to be a dry, dusty academic book but one written by someone with enthusiasm and a huge amount of knowledge to impart to me. ...."Two deep-rooted convictions underpin Arnason's 'History': first, that understanding art is a matter of fundamental importance; second, that the way to learn about art is to look for yourself....." a quote from the preface to the fifth edition. What I remember most about reading this excellent book was the NEED for all of us to LOOK at art. Then go and look again, and again.

The fifth edition covers painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. So, not only did I learn to LOOK at paintings again I looked anew at sculpture, architecture and photography .... again and again.

I thought this book was exciting and it whetted my appetite for much more!

Art as the Definitive Indicator of the grand movements of History
By Herbert L Calhoun
Although this review is only of the third edition of this book, it is already a monumental work of artistic scholarship. It covers in a most comprehensive fashion, the history of paintings, sculpture, architecture and for the first time in this edition, has added, photography.

The author's main focus is paintings. His strategy of explanation has been to locate the essence of each new movement, reveal its characteristics to the reader in clear, non-academic prose, and in this he has succeeded beyond the reader's fondest expectation. In each case he attempts to go back to the beginning and then "walks" the reader up through each movement and thus through the ages, covering all of the schools and trends along the way. Although architecture and photography are added on at the end, they nevertheless serve to complete the overall artistic picture.

Beginning with a thorough account of the influential 19th Century academies of art; i.e., the Romantics, the Realists, the Impressionists, and post-impressionists, among others, Arnason provides a detailed analysis of what was accomplished and how the breakthroughs they represented, prepared the way for subsequent innovations such as Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, and Futurism. The plates are carefully annotated with background situating them properly in the movement that they apply to. All of the artistic giant's entries are presented in full-color glossy prints.

After the Dada period of WW-I, the new emerging anti-war sentiments, with its counter-cultural tinge, were viewed skeptically as unorthodox and the beginning of a generation-long anti-artistic trend. This shocked the art world into stunned acceptance of a new era of almost completely anti-cultural forms of expression. Surrealism took center stage and the young turks of that era -- led by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, etc., reigned until the renaissance of post-WW-II. Since then we have seen the flowering of the modern and post-modern era. Fortunately for the author (and art critics) the artistic parts all fit together and provide one of the surest indexes of the grand movement of cultural history. Five stars

Dagger 22: U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, by Michael Golembesky

The sequel to New York Times bestseller Level Zero Heroes

Level Zero Heroes, Michael Golembesky's bestselling account of Marine Special Operations Team 8222 in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, was just the beginning for these now battle-hardened special operations warriors.
The unforgiving Afghan winter has settled upon the 22 men of Marine Special Operations Team 8222, callsign Dagger 22, in the remote and hostile river valley of Bala Murghab, Afghanistan. The Taliban fighters in the region would have liked nothing more than to once again go dormant and rest until the new spring fighting season began. No chance of that―this winter would be different.
Along with Afghan and International Security Forces (NATO), the Marines of Dagger 22 continued their fight throughout the harsh winter to shape the battlefield before the Afghan ground began to thaw. From one firefight to the next, the noose began to tighten around the village of Daneh Pasab and the Taliban command cell operating there. On April 6, 2010, a ground force consisting of U.S. Army Special Forces, Afghan Commandos and Marine Corps special operations conducted a night assault to destroy the heavily entrenched Taliban force, breaking their grip on the valley and stopping the spring offensive before it even began.
But nothing in Bala Murghab comes easily as combat operations wear on the operators of Dagger 22 as they lean on each other once again in order to complete their mission in one of the most brutal environments on earth.

A Must Read Account of Teamwork
By Benny D
I just finished this book and probably need a little more time to digest it all. However, I wanted to get this review out there in hopes it inspires just one person to buy the book. This is a true, gritty in the muck book about a MARSOC team that fought together, sacrificed together, grew together and died together. I have read almost every book published about the Afghan war and this book does the absolute best job of painting the picture of what life was like for SOF guys out in the armpit of hell(AFGHANISTAN). Lots of action as well, no clear political agenda (although at times I wanted to jump back in time and strangle some of the REMFs mentioned in the book for what they would not allow the operators to do). All around excellent read and I truly wish I could shake all of these guys hands. Thank you to all our Marines who fought, bled and died for us. Those who give thanks to God for you all everyday still exist out here and will never forget your sacrifice.

Outstanding follow up to Level Zero Heroes. Michael Golembesky has done it again with his thrilling, honest, and real narrative about the actions of the men of MSOT 8222. This is a harrowing story of the difficult and complex situation of being a small SOF team in a ridiculous rules-based combat zone and how they overcame it. It's clear to me that these men are the best there is and have set a bar for being such a new member of the special operations community. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history, modern warfare, and the Marine Corps. Great read!

A warrior's account of the cost of war from beginning to end.
By TMoul1
After reading Level Zero Heroes, I wanted to know how the team fared in their mission in the BMG. The follow-up Dagger-22 provides does not disappoint. The 99% of Americans who will never experience or even consider military service would benefit by reading the about the actions of men like these. Being American is not about doing whatever ever you want and saying whatever you want. Being American is about standing up and putting your life on the line for your country, for your family, and for those who cannot or will not do it for themselves.
