"Seeing Things" Historically

Challenging received notions of paucity of description and superfluity of detail, Wall requires scholars to _see_ the making visible of things through historical lenses. Do you skip to the end of books? DO NOT SKIP TO THE END OF THIS BOOK! The Journey makes the Destination so much more fun.

So what do you do when your back is up to the wall, you're facing impossible odds and you're preparing to give everything you have trying to destroy an insane fundamental Element of your world you can't kill because it would kill thousands of people? What if it's not enough? How much are you willing to sacrifice for Love? Till it hurts, till it kills you? Knowing that would you do it anyway? The end of the epic battle between Gabriel, last hope of the Mages and Elements, and the power mad Ryker, Element of Spirit and Void. It's a worthy ending to a fantastic fantasy series. I thought I had it figured out several times only to have to go back and read parts of it again because I missed something small in an earlier chapter that became a huge deal later. The end of the book is simply amazing.

But as Sweeney shows, different performances of the same patriotic song could carry vastly different meanings. By focusing on singing, Sweeney is able to provide a more nuanced reading of French Great War cultures than ever before, and to show that cultures previously held to be exclusive -- those of the home front and the Western front, for example -- existed in dialectical tension and were themselves far from homogenous.

There is not enough I can say about Regina Sweeney's book. It is absolutely ineffable in every sense. The depth of topic and research involved is astounding to any scholar. I highly suggest this book to anyone. It was a most enjoyable and enlightening read!!

Absolutely wonderful.

I bought this book in order to be able to write my senior high school history paper on the extent to which the public opinions of WWI were reflected in the songs written and sung in France during that time. Needless to say, this book was the only thing that made that paper possible. I couldn't have asked for a more well-researched, well-supported book, that was not only informative, but also written in a way which kept it interesting. I only wish I could have spent more time with it, instead of racing through so as to finish my paper by the deadline. A highly recommended read to anyone.

A very good children's book-collectable for adults-cute!

This book is aimed at the kiddie market. However, it is a cute, inexpensive collector's item for adults. It was like $6-8 & in great condition. There were some pictures that I haven't seen on Kate & Wills. Speaking of pictures, this book has the royal wedding-mostly one shot of each couple: Queen mother's, Charles & Di, Andrew & Sarah, Edward & Sofia, & Charles & Camilla & Queen & Prince Philip. This book is about the couples engagement & the days leading up-very brief background on each. This is NOT deep detail biography(see Kate-The Making of A Princess-by Claudia Joseph). It was just to give kids a jest what & who are the royal family; why are they having a big wedding attended by world. William's family tree is in the beginning of the book. Small price, great collectable. I can't wait to get the book only about Kate & the wedding.

Fully Loaded, Comprehensive and Phenomenal Value!

At 33 dollars, they are virtually giving this course away!

So, what's the catch? There is none - it's truly a real deal.

The first thing you notice when you get this box is that it's heavy, about 4 or 5 lbs. The four books are very well produced and the mp3 recordings are high quality. They are self-instructional, so you can listen as you drive, walk or run, without needing to read at the same time.

One complaint:

Lesson One has various sections that are announced on the mp3...

Vocabulary Builder 1, Vocabulary Practice 1, Take It Further 1, Grammar Builder 1, Vocabulary Builder 2, Vocabulary Practice 2, Take It Further 2, Grammar Builder 2, Work Out 1, Work Out 2, etc.

Now, go to any other lesson, take for instance Lesson 9;

You hear the same thing repeated over and over...

Vocabulary Builder 1, Vocabulary Practice 1, Take It Further 1, Grammar Builder 1, Vocabulary Builder 2, Vocabulary Practice 2, Take It Further 2, Grammar Builder 2, Work Out 1, Work Out 2, etc.

No matter which lesson you are listening to, each and every lesson has exactly the same section numbering, namely, either "1" or "2". So, you constantly hear "Vocabulary Builder 1" even if it's Chapter 9 and it's actually Vocabulary Builder 18 (using sequential numbering). In the middle of any mp3, you can't tell what lesson you're listening to from the section announcements.

It's infuriating. All they needed to do was use a number system like 1.1, 1.2, 2.1,... 9.1, 9.2 or even straight sequential numbering 1,2,3,4... 30,31,32, etc..

That's my only complaint and I really hope they fix it in future.

Even so, this course is phenomenal value!

Learning Mandarin? Don't even think about it...

An OK method, but could be lots better. Still good for the price

Bear in mind, I'm only about halfway through the first book.

My recommendations:

1. Take a LOT of time reading up on the appendix on pinyin - you're going to need it, even before the first lesson.
2. There's a little book in the collection that I didn't initially see called "character guide." Look at that before trying to learn any characters.
3. Use the book as primary, and the CD as practice.
4. You're not going to learn this on a couple of minutes per day. Make up your own flash cards and study them.

Now, for my review. It's OK, but I had some issues with it. The biggest is that they spend no time at all introducing Pinyin, but launch right into writing out vocabulary words, which makes the text useless without the audio CD. On the other hand, the audio CD sometimes moves at much too rapid a pace, one notable example being the numbers, which took three or four listens in order to start getting it.

I also don't think they spent enough time explaining the tonal system, and what the limits of correctness are. I would have loved to have heard words that differed only in the tones, so I could compare.

Their presentation of the "real" Chinese writing system is totally inadequate, unless you happen to notice the separate book in the collection addressing writing. That book, however, spends a lot of time explaining things like horizontal lines, and not enough about the iconography.

I also bought it to prepare for a business trip to China, and it spends a lot of time on things like family relationships, and little time in the first book on essential words for the traveler like, for example, "passport" "hotel" or "restaurant."

However, the book is a much better value than things like Pimsleur which are ten times the price.

Professional, well written, and comprehensive, but omits simple travel words

These are top of the line, professional, well packaged, and informative books and cds on how to learn Mandarin. I would give it a five, except that you don't get any simple travel-like words until near the end of the beginning section. I don't need to know all members of the family, but I do need to know how to get directions, a taxi, or the name of a good restaurant or exchange rate.There are three sections, beg/inter/adv. It also includes a character book, which is indispensable to learning the Chinese alphabet.

As the author of: [...], I can tell you with certainty, Dr. Brame has done it again and written another book filled with great, concise summaries/conclusions about what sex is and is not for "Grown-Ups". Her book is a must-read for those of us who intellectualize sex - her phrase. I recognize how vital it is to have a clear understanding of your partners (or partners) sexual needs and how important it is to have a healthy, diverse, and fulfilling sex life: a healthy sex life fosters relationship stability and improves your personal wellbeing.

Dr. Brame's book explains that sex is experiential, not intellectual, and that you should be seeking a relationship that affirms all partners' needs. She describes how your sex life should include enough variety to keep both partners excited - and then provides some ideas about what "variety" might look like for you. She also cautions that you and your partner should maintain a shared or compatible sexual self-identity that includes compatible sexual personalities. In the end, for a healthy, sexually compatible relationship, Dr. Brame notes that all sexually-involved parties should be satisfied with whatever sexual path you take.

The new book!!

Gloria Brame's latest book, "The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer For The 21st
Century Volume II: Sex For Grown-Ups," is yet another stunning victory, both
for Dr. Brame, and for anyone who reads it. One of her many strengths is
that as a therapist, she writes for everyone: the seasoned kink scene
player, the "vanilla" sexual person just curious about variations in sex and
techniques, or anyone in between. In her books, there is no "too-cool"
person, waiting at the door to show you out---only a warm, intelligent and
knowledgeable person to welcome you in: Dr. Brame. Her major point in this
particular book is this: deviation from "the norm" is the new normal. Our
sexual definitions heretofore were decided wrongly from the Victorian age
and repeated and preached badly for years, until now. She strives to make
knowledge-seeking people aware of this, to cut down the barriers to free and
healthy thinking about all things sexual, and to make people aware of the
real health benefits of good sex and masturbation. This is a page-turner!
There are dungeons and drag queens here, sure, but there is much more. Treat
yourself to Gloria's Mind.

You Totally Need A Sex Make-Over!

I was luckily provided with an author's copy of this book to review. Now, thank your sex life that I was there to help.

My deflowering sucked. I mean, I wish I could give you some magical, romantic tale about it. But, it was an eye-opening experience that really made me question the whole idea of having sexual intercourse. It wasn't until my mid-20's, following the birth of my child, that I really felt sexually liberated. Imagine a bunch of strangers staring at your naughty bits, seeing you secrete bodily fluids that only ooze out in your bathroom. After that, I thought there was nothing to be ashamed of. Childbirth definitely gave me a freedom that counteracted the cultural and religious ideologies I'd been taught growing up in the South. And, I felt confident that at some point I'd meet someone who shared the same values. Then, the 30's happened.

I began to think I was some freak of nature who was cursed in the intimacy department. But this book, this wonderful manual of all things sex-amazing, changed this. I won't go into my kinks, whether I like spankings, or my preferred gender of love. But, I will tell you that this book made me feel good. How often do you read something that makes you feel good about sexual choices you've made past, present, and future? Me? Not often. Hey, born-again Christian here. I was taught there was happiness--Sodom and Gomorrah happiness. And then there's Hell--where all the harlots and Jezebels who want non-traditional sex that doesn't lead to procreation go to burn. Jezebel Hell. I'm practical enough to know that I'm going to no such place. But if I did, I am now comforted that I wouldn't be alone. Ha ha ha! I'm just kidding.

Dr. Brame is so freaking awesome. If I wasn't so far away, she'd definitely be one of my therapists because I've got some issues to work out. In the meantime, her book has done me wonders. Up until this point, I've only credited two works of non-fiction as positive influences in my sexual identity. The first is "The Cult of Womanhood" by Marlene LeGates. The other is A Heroine's Journey by Maureen Murdock. (Isn't it cool how both of them have "M" names? So weird!) Now, I have Gloria Brame. (I'm totally counting the "mmmmm" in Brame, creating my triumvirate of groundbreaking, M-named ladies).

Dr. Brame's world is sort of like the Island of Misfit Toys. When you saw those poor playthings on that old school Christmas special, you really felt something for them. It is possible that you actually started to reflect on how these toys related to you. Was it you who wanted to be Joy-In-The-Box when society made you be a Jack-In-The-Box? This is what many of you might feel if you read this book. The topics discussed totally relate to you in your river of denial in Egypt. At first, it's like viewing a make-over show where the participants must let go of an outdated style to embrace something more personal and more contemporary. It is easy to think you're so hip that this would never happen to you. But, a quick review of your closet brings the truth to the surface--you totally need a make-over. If you're in dire need of a sexual makeover, please buy this book. Nobody is promising an orgasm. But, there might be an orgasm, possibly more orgasms. Why are you still reading this review?

The art of being...

The author has described in a very clear, funny and simple way how we are and how we relate to each other. What I liked the most is that each character reminded me of someone I know or even myself at times. It is really easy to imagine how each character would look like in the real world. It is an entertaining story.

A Very Clever Take on the Classic Family Drama

Christmas dinner with the whole family and each member has a particular, quirky rule they follow to help them cope - what could possibly go wrong?

This was a very enjoyable read. I imagine Act 2 will be pretty intense and chaotic when performed live.
