Soothing, Humble, Audacious, A tad intellectual in places...

I find myself returning to this book again and again. On a difficult day, it is a balm to my troubled mind. Bluntly, it is not evident why this book would have a soothing effect. It is, overtly, a bit tedious. Yet for some reason, when I begin reading, it is a balm; more so than other books on the subject; at least to me. I tentatively attribute the soothing effect to the author's insight, his plain and humble concerns, and to the translator's lucid mastery of the English language.

The book is structured as a series of short talks; each talk is usually followed by questions and answers. Overall, the questions strike me as quite astute, and greatly illuminate the subject. The questions are sometimes incredulous, rather than trite or fawningly indulgent (as a cynic might expect).

In this book, Nishijima introduces us to a few of the key persons in Buddhist lore, and elaborates Buddhist ideas. The book is perhaps unfashionably intellectual for a Zen treatise aimed at the common man, but the book is not frivolously intellectual. The author goes on some dubious philosophical diversions so that he can subsequently explain his understanding of Dogen's teachings and the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. This is most audacious! Nishijima offers his own re-articulation and re-construction of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. As a layman, I find his modest proposal to be useful, and loosely consistent with traditional dogma. Nishijima is not pushy, but offers his alternative re-construction for those who find it to have merit. He also explains why and how he came to his conclusions; and his arguments resonate with me. Even if I choose to reject Nishijima's re-construction of the Four Noble Truths, his writing made traditional elaborations of them more accessible to me. Admittedly, much of this book is merely Nishijima's own musing and supposition. But that is the circumstance in which we find ourselves: thousands of years removed from Buddhist inception; from which teaching occurred largely via oral transmission through the centuries.

Readers who wither when afflicted with intellectual discussion may, ultimately, prefer other books.

Despite this book's subtle virtues, it is not my favorite when it comes to explaining technical aspects of how to practice Zazen (sitting meditation). For learning to practice zazen, I currently favor Katsuki Sekida's book, Zen Training: Methods and Philosophy. That was the book that really helped me grok sitting meditation for the first time. Your mileage may vary.

I advise against reading dogmatically. The goal is merely to point you in the correct direction so that your own practice and experience will be fruitful.

A Clear Presentation of Soto Zen Buddhism by a Modern Master

I felt moved after reading this book to add to the positive reviews that it has received. Having assembled a nice little library of books on Buddhism over the years certainly doesn't make me an expert but it does put me in a position to share my reaction to this book and why it stands out from many others I have read. I have never come across a presentation of Buddhism as clear and useful as the one contained within this book. This is a book that presents Buddhism in a logical, systematic way and I find myself returning to it again and again.
Gudo Nishijima is a Zen master who has held a full time job in a Japanese company for many years. This fact impresses me in that I am able to relate to him better than other teachers who have spent the majority of their time in cloistered monastic environs. Not meant as a knock on monastic Buddhism which has its role to play for sure, but it is refreshing to know that this teacher knows what it's like to grind it out in the modern rat race with the rest of us. He also has an impressive knowledge of western philosophy and history that he uses to great effect to clarify the presentation of Buddhism here. His appreciation for science is very refreshing as well.
This is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is looking for an orthodox academic presentation of Buddhism that might be used as a textbook for a class, that would be "What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula. This book deconstructs Buddhism down to its essence and presents it logically without all the obscurity and "long windedness" found in many other books. This is one you can really take something from, it has inspired me to stop just reading about Zen and actually start practicing on daily basis.

EXCELLENT !!

This book and along with Kosho Uchiyama's "Opening the Hand of Thought" (in my opinion) are the only 2 books one has to read to truly understand Zen. Nishijima places high importance on 'zazen' which I feel many other buddhist/zen authors unfortunately don't. This book is truly a 'gem' and one that I would strongly recommend to anybody interested in Zen Meditation (zazen). His metaphor of 'meeting the real dragon' and thus living our lives 'head on' (instead of living vicariously through the 'pictures / trophies' we hang in our houses) -- is a priceless teaching !!

Long overdue

The newly released Dictionary of Early Judaism (hereafter DEJ) is long overdue. It was just released in November - but seems like it was in the making for a some time.
For those who are familiar with IVPs Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels and the like, this volume will surely be a welcome addition. There is much to praise here.

First, and unlike the aforementioned IVP "Dictionary of ..." series on the OT & NT, DEJ begins with thirteen full-length (20-40pp) essays on critical topics such as:

"Early Judaism in Modern Scholarship" (John Collins)
"Jewish History in the Land of Israel" (James VanderKam)
"Early Judaism and Early Christianity" (Daniel Harlow)

as well as the one I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into soon: "Early Jewish Biblical Interpretation" by James Kugel. Side note: I use Kugel's "The Bible as it Was" in my seminary courses. My seminarians' heads usually explode (in the good sense) when they read early Jewish interpretations of Gen 3 - interpretations that are divergent and surprising - like the Book of Jubilees, or the apocryphal "Life of Adam and Eve," which posits a conversation between Eve and Satan outside of Eden. In LA&E, Eden is depicted as a temple - and it could be argued that for the audience of Jubilees, Gen 3 is "used" to promote Levitical purity - especially conjugal abstinence before priests enter the temple for temple service. I say this because in the text of LA&E, Adam and Eve consumate their relationship OUTSIDE the garden - and abstain in its sanctuary - interesting. (Again, heads explode.)

As an orthodox Catholic, I should add that my goal is not to conjure up such interpretations as consistent with Catholic theology, or to propose that they "replace" orthodox interpretations of Gen 3 - not in the least. If anything, I hope my seminarians will better appreciate what I call the "Christian innovation." Specifically, when we read Paul in Rom 5 ("Just as sin entered the world through one man ...") in light of such early Jewish texts, it is not hard to see just how "radical" Paul (and later, Augustine's) developing notion of Original Sin really was. It was in light of the Easter event - and only this, I'd argue, that the new interpretations of the OT can be understood. And so, grasping these earlier Jewish interpretations of the OT can help Christians better appreciate our own traditions - while learning a ton about early Judaism in all of its splendor and variety of biblical thought. (I hope that makes sense.) For all these reasons, the Kugel essay should be an important contribution - though in fairness, I have not reviewed this essay - yet.

After these thirteen longer essays, the dictionary-proper begins. Here, we can read over 500 articles from a considerable array of scholars. A few examples: John Collins (on a whole bunch of apocalyptic-related topics; Michael Stone, James VanderKam, David Aune ("miracles"), Dale Allison [!] (on "Abraham" - wow, can't wait to read that one; "Kingdom of God"); John Barclay ("Josephus"); Carol Newsome ("Job"); Craig Evans ("Gospel of Mark"); George Nickelsberg ("Resurrection") and on and on.

Another side note: One of my own professors from my doctoral program at Loyola Univ. Chicago, Fr. Thomas Tobin contributes on "Logos." Having had this leading Philonic expert in class, I can assure you that this article will be quite well done.

This is a cursory "review" - as I just purchased DEJ. After it arrives, and I peruse it, I may have a few additional comments. In the meantime, at 1400+ pp, DEJ looks to be a worthy volume - and one all scholars / students should at least consider - if not grab. Why not do so today?

Afterthought on different (but related) volume of biblical interest. I have read some negative reviews of Brant Pitre's brand-new volume "The Jewish Roots of the Eucharist." Let me dispel those critiques as erroneous and unfair. I suppose that some Protestant readers may not follow through Pitre's argument to its eucharistic end - fine; but his clarity of writing and grasp of early Jewish and Christian sources cannot and should not be overlooked. This is a good (introductory) volume on an interesting - and important topic. Pitre is on-point ... so read and enjoy!

Doesn't get much better than this

I wish I would have obtained it when it was published in 2010. If you have any interesting in early Judaism or Christian origins you need this book.

It is a shelf-resource, plain and simple. It has about fourteen hundred (large) pages of content. Each page is dual columned for easy reading. Topics are arranged in alphabetic order as expected.

The dictionary (this word seems quite insufficient) begins with a dozen or so major essays on everything from Judaism in modern scholarship to biblical interpretation in early Judaism to the Dead Sea Scrolls to the relationship between early and rabbinic Judaism.

The list of contributors is ten pages long. Authors include the most respected scholars in a variety of sub-fields that relate to early Judaism.

The beginning of the book includes a list of topics under headers such as “Literary Genres”, “Josephus”, “Groups in Society:, “Religious Institutions”, and much more. There is also a list of maps (hence, the encyclopedia includes maps), a chronological outline, and a list of important abbreviations.

It is hard to “review” a dictionary on a blog in such a way that the reader can recognize the worth of the volume, especially one as good as this one. (I recommend following the above link to Amazon.com so that you can preview the book.) Let me say again, if early Judaism interest you, or even rabbinic Judaism, Christian origins, or later Christianity, you will want this book. It is worth the price. It is the work of the best scholarship has to offer.

An Engaging Novel

An engaging novel carried forward largely by conversation. Peacock was very familiar with the Classics, and the chapters all have Greek or Latin epigraphs. The conversations are witty, but the characters and Peacock himself are a little too eager to show off their learning. Critics used to say that something "smelled of the lamp," meaning that it was learned in an ostentatious way and showed the effects of "burning the midnight oil"--another phrase you don't hear much any more. A good read for someone willing to use his or her mind and previous education.

I highly recommend the novel, but the Dodo Press edition doesn't even seem to have been proofread after scanning. There are numerous typos (including character names and symbols instead of letters), foot notes are not at the bottom of the page (you have to search through the body of the text to find them), and the Greek text is not included. Very disappointing.

Very good but not all comfortable reading.

Wow, I loved it, I hated it...I'm all messed up in my head. This is a deviously well thought out plot, well written, and edited. It is also a total mind-twist, that is the only word that aptly describes what i have just read and the effect it's had on me.
Yvonne, the privileged in wealth and social standing and as so often the case, deprived and needy emotionally, neglected by parents who send her to boarding school and subsequently a paid allowance and apartment in Paris to assuage their responsibilities and your left with a needy young woman. Now a courtesan but never a whore, to the man she is convinced she loves and hopes and believes loves her. Part of her yearns for exclusivity yet accepts he may not be a one woman man and she is a paid consort for whatever he wants of her...within reason. Here lies the crux of one problem.
She takes a journey thinking she follows his instructions, which are ordered to the letter, but the events that occur to her for the slightest breach of these criteria set for her to adhere to and strictly will need an open mind by the reader to say the least. Sadistic punishments for the slightest infringement. She questions her treatment, people she crosses, an old school friend Lysette and lover. Each time she thinks she has found help, adversity follows. Then her training, humiliation, debauchery, debasement in so many ways, not least birch and then the terror of the piercings, at which point i was angry at her manipulation toward sexual slavery and I loved it and hated it...her state of confusion, fear, aloneness tore my compassion and even traumatized me at times that I had to leave the story for a break but couldn't walk away. I had to know what Lindsey Brooks had in store for his character, Yvonne.
I'm still angry at her betrayal by all...it is not a satisfactory place to leave her in my mind and heart. I'm not happy and yes I would and will at some time read it all over again. I admired her journey, her new found courage but ill found trust and future. So why can't I say this is just a story, a fantasy, a character...I don't know, perhaps it is the quality of
the writer that makes me feel for her this way. OK love it and hate it...it's good and I would like to give part of it a crap star rating but see the clever quality so give it it's due - 5 star. Oh and Mr Brooks you really are sadistic at times!

Hold on to your pantaloons because this is a bumpy ride!

When, not if, but when you pick up YVONNE: A COURTESAN'S COMPULSION, you have got to prepare yourself for a dark and mysterious exploration into the unknown. This ain't your mama's "sugar kink" BDSM book, this is a "big-girl/boy" story.

Yvonne is a bright and beautiful, well-bred courtesan, not a whore, a courtesan and there is a big difference. She is exactly the kind of woman you might imagine decorating the arm of an aristocratic man, but behind closed doors, the mask comes off and she is a well-trained submissive willing to do just about anything to please her Master.

In a phone call, Yvonne is told to dress like a hooker, board a train and await further instruction, so, she does exactly that. From there, she finds herself in a series of unfortunate situations and begins to question that the owner of that commanding voice on the phone was actually her Master. As her journey progresses, she is forced to perform and witness a number of acts that have never entered her mind - she is confused by her body's reaction. The combination of arousal and disgust is foreign to her and she doesn't quite know what to make of it.

YVONNE: A COURTESAN'S COMPULSION is sometimes painful to read. If you have an aversion to acts such as humiliation, use of enemas, non-con, forced seduction, and public urination, then you should steer clear. Otherwise, buckle up because this book is going to take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride! The wide variety of kinks commonly associated with BDSM will leave you gasping in horror, crying in shame and screaming for someone to give you an ounce of the pleasure Yvonne seemed to have experienced along the way.

Smutty Smut Spectacular

*** Review contains warnings, but nothing that spoils the storyline (imo).***

This book has a strong sexual tone and theme from start to finish. The first portion of the book is completely M/f focused. Then the next portion switches to fully F/f focused. But there are also multi-partner scenes throughout and even some menage.

I really enjoyed this book because it hit on kinks I enjoy reading about like dubious sexual consent & non-consensual sex in an erotic setting. It is a reoccurring theme so please heed the warning if content like that is not to your taste. The story in general is not light, fluffy, or romantic (imo).

The story also contains a lot of different BDSM themes throughout. Just about every scene was mixed-up with something new & exciting. I really loved all the diversity. The BDSM level is moderate to heavy.

Overall, there is an actual storyline in there somewhere with all the sex scenes, but the primary focus is on the erotica.

Excellent textbook for a course on atomic physics

This book is comprehensive, updated, and enjoys
the ineffable insight and clarity of a real
institution in the field: prof. C. J. Joachain.
A definite plus is that the discussions are
disseminated with a lot of references to the
literature, so it can work as a good introduction
to any of the manifold fields treated.
It is true, though, that it is not extremely advanced,
nor very general in its derivations, therefore if
you are looking for THE "summa theologica", perhaps
this is not what you are looking for.

A 'must have' for any physicist

This book contains a complete program on the atomic and molecular physics field, where the concepts are correctly explained, not leaving behind the formalism but making them easy to follow and understand for the student. I would like to leave a note on what I think is a very small number of examples, which sometimes would help to make the explanations and concepts more digestible.
So far, I had used the first edition, and this 2nd edition, while more complete and reformatted, has not changed too much the good book it has always been.

On another note, I simply can't understand how difficult it is to find/purchase this book anywhere else out of amazon. Even in the publishing house I had troubles trying to purchase it! Eventually, Amazon was the answer (a bit more expensive but not a huge difference) and I have no regrets. It was delivered way before the expected date and that is a thumbs-up in my opinion.
It is surprising because in every field of each science, there are always a few basic books that should be available -almost- everywhere, and in the field of atomic physics, this is definitely one.
