A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum

Have you ever read a short story and wished it was a full length novel? That is how I felt after completing "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure." Short and sweet at 43 pages, Candice Hern has introduced characters that I instantly loved and wanted to know more about. What grabbed me so immediately you ask? The humor and effervescent theme.

In this brief format an author must use every word and sentence to advance the narrative quickly to its conclusion. Hern wastes no time by introducing the two main characters in an outrageous and humorous way: our hero, the Earl of Evesham, is test driving his new curricle down Park Lane in London and spies a young woman perched in a tree attempting to make her way over a fence. Caught by her skirts on a branch, she is prevented from progressing and literally up a tree! The unusual sight of a finely dressed woman in such a predicament is quite intriguing to the lord, but the fact that she is attempting to escape from the garden of the royal owner that he was appointed to meet the next day to make a formal offer for his daughter's hand is even more interesting. It is an arranged marriage since his boyhood and he has not seen his future fianc� since she was a child. Could this pretty young lady be his intended? No. It was highly unlikely that Lady Ann of Gloucester, daughter of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and niece to the king would be dangling from a tree in the fashionable Mayfair district. Was she instead a housebreaker escaping with the family silver? Who could this "adorable sprite" be?

She quickly shares that she is running away from her life--for a day--her last day of freedom before her life changes forever and she sacrifices herself to the "altar of duty." That cinched it. She was his intended. He offers to help her down on one condition: that he be allowed to escort her on her adventure. She agrees and an unlikely alliance begins: and before it's merry conclusion we are take on a grand spree through several amusing sites in Regency London: to Hyde Park to watch a balloon accent, to Black Friars Bridge to eat oysters, to Ludgate Hill to admire the shops where he buys her perfume, to Pasternoster Row to browse print and book shops where he purchases The Picture of London for 1802, Being a Correct Guide to all of the Curiosities, Amusements, Exhibitions, Public Establishments and Remarkable Objects in and near London, for the use of Stragers, Foreigners, and all Persons who are not acquainted with the British Metropolis. In short, a tourist guide book! She is delighted with all that she experiences, and most importantly him.

Assuming a name to hide his true identity and the connection to her family, along the way they inadvertently run across his friends who want to meet this pretty young lady; one even thinks she is his new ladybird! But, he is determined to keep up the ruse. "As the day progressed and he'd grown increasingly fond of her, even a little infatuated, he'd begun to feel a tad guilty at his deception. Even so, he was oddly reluctant to give it up. He was enjoying himself too much." And so are we.

What a fun romp through some unusual sites in London that the Ton may not have frequented - and that was the point. Lady Ann wanted to experience life of the common man; to see their entertainments and live her life as a commoner in one day. Lord Evesham is a capable and charming guide, enjoying her wide-eyed amazement with a fresh perspective and a growing appreciation for the woman who would hopefully become his wife. But now how will he ever transition into the earl who she is pledged to marry, and will she be too angry and embarrassed to accept him when she discovers his deception?

A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum, "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure" is all that its title promised. It is Roman Holiday meets Georgette Heyer and I could not be more enchanted with this reverse fairytale of two strangers who climb down from the their high perch and enjoy the simple life and each other without inhibitions or preconceived assumptions. I was so captivated by each of the protagonists that I did not want their story to end. Like the conclusion of the delightful movie Roman Holiday, they do have to face the reality of their return to royalty, but their lives will never be burdened with regret.

Unusual Circumstances and Coincidences

How many of us have gone on holiday or an outing and either responded to or made some trivial comment to a stranger, and after spending some time together realized we'd found a soulmate and ended up wondering what might have been? It was like that for Annie after she met Will under rather unusual circumstances and spent the day with him. For Will, the coincidence of meeting Annie his bethrothed since she was six years of age, without her knowing who he was became the perfect opportunity to find out who she really was. You will love meeting Lady Ann, daughter of a Royal Duke, during two encounters with her maid. The first one will have you muttering, "Well, I never!" and the second one will have you doing fist pumps. On the one hand, I agree this love story is way too short. On the other hand, I like the way it's all rather surreal until she sees her betrothed for the first time. Very nicely done. Knowing Lady Ann, she eschewed the title Princess and compromised with Lady when she realized how differently she was treated from everyone else.

Very sweet and fun

I found this a very sweet story. The Princess Ann (minor royalty) sneaks out of her enormous house and a gentleman - luckily, a good one and even more luckily, the one she's supposed to be betrothed to - happens to see her stuck in a tree. So he takes her out driving and to see a balloon ascension and to wander around all over Regency London without telling her who he is. So it's a bit Roman Holiday. I really liked the way they got to know each other by having fun together (though I got a bit mad at him for not telling her who he was).

And yes, I agree - it's too short! I can hardly wait until Hern starts writing full-length novels again (hint hint)

The best available introduction to OE poetry for beginners.

Old English poetry is hard to translate for a variey of reasons. OE poetic style is very compact, very nominal and very dense.Accurate translations often seem wordy; "poetic" ones tend to miss a lot. This is the only book currently available ( as far as I know) which provides a selection of OE poems in a bilingual format. I have used this book in teaching; the translations are pretty good and the OE is right there for the curious. A good and very handy book.

Highly Recommend To The OE Reader

My Old English class in college was the most laborious of them all especially as my textbook was stolen, which had an extensive glossary. This book helped smooth out the rough edges of my translations and just gave me a better sense of how to put the words together in some coherent form. It's a nice collection of the most well known OE verses and poems and should prove interesting to the non-student who is interested in very old poetry and etymology as well.

The literature of pagan and post-pagan England - beautifully translated

This slim paperback provides a gripping and powerful and wonderfully translated sampler of Anglo-Saxon literature. It provides the reader's imagination with a vivid intuitive understanding of the mindset of the Anglo-Saxons before and following their conversion to Christianity. This is the poetry that was written in "Old English" or "Anglo-Saxon" [ though both terms are inaccurate and misleading; indeed, scholars will pick holes even in the very concept of the Anglo-Saxons..... but let's just enjoy their poetry!! ]

While there is a Christian gloss on most of these very powerful and very moving poems, they still inhabit, in good measure, the vanished pagan (non-Christian) world of the great hero, tough and strong and stern and resolute, driven only by honour and nobility, and not all self-regarding, who stoically endures incredible and prolonged hardships; that mighty and war-hardened man who wins everlasting fame and renown through his great deeds of prowess.
In these poems, while there is a sense of the transitoriness of life, and the vanity of fame and earthly achievement, as is dutifully required by Christian Theology, and there is expression of deep regret for the loss of the noble lord and his splendid retinue of noble retainers, all of them now buried deep in the Earth and dead forever, there is still a lot of the "old religion" and the old pre-Christian world of the War Band to be found in these poems; the great and noble lord & king who is loved as a father by his men, giving generous gifts to them, as they feast and drink in his hall, hearing tales of noble deeds, and ever planning new raids on surrounding kingdoms.

Here we find some of the imaginative wellsprings that inspired Professor Tolkien to use his extraordinary imagination to create his own brilliant powerful and poetic myth for the English people (the Lord of The Rings, and the history of Middle Earth).

Suffice it to say that if you are interested in England before the Norman conquest and after the departure of the Roman legions, you will find great enjoyment in reading this book.

Richard Hamer's translations from the Anglo-Saxon are powerful and poetic, and far more enjoyable to read than some of the stilted academic translations of this material, as can be illustrated by the following passage he has translated from "The Wanderer" : :

" Where is the horse now, where the hero gone?
Where is the bounteous lord, and where the benches
For feasting? Where are all the joys of hall?
Alas for the bright cup, the armoured warrior,
The glory of the prince. That time is over,
Passed into night as it had never been. "

Herling ( A World Apart ), who has lived in Italy for 50 years, sets these pieces in his adopted country, using finely honed prose to summon visions of the past. The best entry, "The Tower," visits a devout leper in the 18th century; after watching his sister die of the disease, he must face his own death alone, confined in a tower. The title novella is the weakest link, never gaining focus or momentum despite its dramatic plot, in which a tragic accident proves to have been the result of tormented passions involving a mason, his fiancee and a priest. But Herling's style cannot be faulted: his sensitivity to the natural world and his lyrical language beautifully capture the sensuous backdrops of his dramas of salvation.

Herling, who is considered one of Poland's greatest living writers, recorded his experiences in a Russian slave labor camp in A World Apart (Arbor House, 1986), which received considerable acclaim. The three novellas that comprise this volume are set in Italy, where Herling now lives, and evince a pastoral mood and religious overtones. "The Island" tells the story of a mason who became disabled after an accident at work. "The Tower" uses the device of a story within a story to explore the feelings of a man who encounters and befriends a leper confined to a tower. "The Second Coming," set in the 13th century, draws parallels between Pope Urban IV's life and the agonies endured by Jesus. In each case, the protagonist experiences spiritual growth. The stories are literary and traditional. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

These artists have taken vinyl records as their subject or medium, producing sound work, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, video, and performance. Works by well-known artists such as Laurie Anderson, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Carrie Mae Weems appear alongside those of other North American artists, and of artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, some of whom have never before exhibited in a U.S. museum. Among the works shown are David Byrne's original Polaroid photomontage used for the cover of the 1978 Talking Heads album More Songs about Buildings and Food, the fictive soul "album covers" created by the outsider artist Mingering Mike in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and Wheel of Steel (2006), an arresting narrative of record-playing told through digital photos by the South African-born and Berlin-based artist Robin Rhode. In addition to the 225 images, 200 of which appear in color, the catalog includes personal reflections and critical analyses. All of the artists in the exhibition contribute personal statements about their work in relation to the vinyl record, and critics and scholars explore the historical impact of the record on art and music and the ways the medium has helped shape individual and collective identities.

About the Author

Wilda Rinehart Gardner received an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1973 from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. After working as a staff nurse and charge nurse, she became a public health nurse and served in that capacity for a number of years. In 1975, she received her certification as a family planning nurse practitioner from the midwifery program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. She completed her BSN in 1979 and MSN in 1980 from Mississippi University for Women. She retired after 26 years as nursing instructor at Northeast Mississippi Community College where she taught medical-surgical nursing and maternal newborn nursing. From 1982 to 2012, she operated Rinehart and Associates Nursing Review to assist graduate nurses to pass the National Council of Licensure Exam. She also worked as a curriculum consultant with nursing faculty in the improvement of test construction. Ms. Rinehart has served as a convention speaker in several states in the southeast and has been a reviewer of medical-surgical and obstetric texts.

Dr. Diann Sloan received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Mississippi, and a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Mississippi University for Women. In addition to her nursing degrees, she holds a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Georgia State University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education, with minors in both Psychology and Educational Psychology, from Mississippi State University. She has completed additional graduate studies in healthcare administration at Western New England College and the University of Mississippi. Dr. Sloan has taught pediatric nursing, psychiatric mental health nursing, and medical surgical nursing in both associate degree and baccalaureate nursing programs. Dr. Sloan has conducted test construction workshops for both RN and PN faculty and is coauthor of the Pearson Online Review.

Clara Hurd received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi (1975). Her experiences in nursing are clinically based, having served as a staff nurse in medical-surgical nursing. She has worked as an oncology, intensive care, orthopedic, neurological, and pediatric nurse. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, and her Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Ms. Hurd is a certified nurse educator. She currently serves as a nurse educator consultant and an independent contractor. Ms. Hurd has taught in both associate degree and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. She was a faculty member of Mississippi University for Women; Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee; Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee; and Northeast Mississippi Community College. Ms. Hurd joined Rinehart and Associates in 1993. She has worked with students in preparing for the National Council Licensure Exam and with faculty as a consultant in writing test items. Ms. Hurd has also been a presenter at nursing conventions on various topics, including item-writing for nursing faculty. Her primary professional goal is to prepare the student and graduate for excellence in the delivery of healthcare.

The present volume, in honour of Professor Patrick Thornberry, presents new thinking on minority and indigenous rights in international law. About the Author
Nazila Ghanea is Senior Lecturer in International Law and Human Rights at the University of London, Institute of Commonwealth Studies. She has publications in the field of minority rights, freedom of religion or belief and the UN human rights machinery. She has acted as a United Nations consultant on minority rights in Iran. Her recent publications include "Human Rights, the UN and the Baha is in Iran" (The Hague: Kluwer Law International, 2003). Alexandra Xanthaki is Lecturer in International Law at Brunel University. She has published on indigenous rights, group rights and minority rights and has acted as a United Nations consultant on indigenous rights. She is currently completing a monograph on the rights of indigenous peoples in international law."
