About the Author
Lou Fant (1931-2001) was considered a leading expert in the ASL field--and considered the ambassador between two worlds. He was a teacher, interpreter, consultant, sign language coach, and actor. His accomplishments included cofounding the National Theatre of the Deaf in 1967; creating the sign laguage for the film Clan of the Cave Bear; being the sign language coach in Children of a Lesser God; coaching such actors as Diane Keaton and Mare Winningham; appearing in scores of movies, plays, TV shows; and hosting the Emmy Award-winning TV program "Off Hand."
Lou Fant (1931-2001) was heralded as a leading expert in the ASL field and an ambassador between the deaf and hearing worlds. He was a teacher, interpreter, consultant, sign language coach, and actor. Fant cofounded the National Theatre of the Deaf in 1967.
Barbara Bernstein Fant has taught beginning and advanced ASL at Seattle Central Community College since 1990. On occasion, she contracts with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and Seattle Diversity Words in providing ASL classes and tutoring to various corporations.
Sign Media, founded in 1979, is the nation's leading producer of videotape and print materials on American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. Excellent resource

I am a certified sign language interpreter who recently started teaching a sign language class at my church. Up until now, I've never found a book with which I was completely satisfied. I always ended up adding a lot of supplementary materials, many of which I had to develop. Thank God for this book / DVD set. Starting beginners with basic ASL phrases instead of disjointed vocabulary words is a WONDERFUL way to get them interested! Grammar can then be explained as it occurs naturally. I know I will be using this book and DVD for many years!

In my opinion one of the best books for learning ASL

I was gifted the eBook version of this book. I loved it and wanted to share it with my wife.
I am hard of hearing and learning ASL is somewhat of a necessity. This book is succinct and to the point, but at the same time lacking little.
It teaches grammar essentials, and vocabulary through useful phrases. The drawings of the signs are easy to understand, but there is a DVD that accompanies the book that clears up any confusion.
This may not be the only book or DVD that you will get to learn ASL, but it is definitely one that you should.

Pictures could be better

This book is really good. I love that they included a DVD with the book. The illustrations could be A LOT better but you can get the basic understanding if you read "How to Use This Book" chapter and if this is not your first book. Also, I think it could have been better if it had a quiz section, either in the book or on the DVD. All in all its a good ASL book to have!
