The second edition of Physical Chemistry for the Biological Sciences builds on the success of the first edition with important updates and new material to provide a state-of-the-art introduction to physical chemistry for both professionals and students. The topics discussed include thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, statistical mechanics, and hydrodynamics. As in the first edition, most of the subjects can be understood without advanced mathematics. However, because modern day students often have a strong background in mathematics, more advanced treatments are also presented. Some of the additions are:

• Multivariable calculus, which students can have the option of utilizing if desired.
• Maxwell relationships, formulation of equilibria in terms of the chemical potential, and extensive discussion of activity coefficients.
• Extended treatment of quantum mechanics, including molecular vibrations and tunneling.
• Electronic structure of molecules utilizing molecular orbitals as well as Hartree-Fock and density functional theory.
• Statistical mechanics, including the Boltzmann distribution, partition functions, and statistical ensembles, with applications to biology.

About the Author
Gordon G. Hammes, PhD, is the Distinguished Service Professor of Biochemistry Emeritus at Duke University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has received several national awards, including the American Chemical Society Award in Biological Chemistry and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology William C. Rose Award. Dr. Hammes was Editor of the journal Biochemistry from 1992-2003.

Sharon Hammes-Schiffer, PhD, is the Swanlund Professor of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society, the Biophysical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science. Dr. Hammes-Schiffer has served as the Deputy Editor of The Journal of Physical Chemistry B and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Reviews.

Wright the Man is Chronicled Here

Wright the man is chronicled here, in one of the two best biographies of the architectural superstar. One would also want to read Brendan Gill's "Many Masks" as a companion to Ms Secrest's treatment of F Ll W - just to get the harmonizing flavors of opinion.

Ms Secrest does magnificent research and shares it in a narrative that flows easily and keeps one's attention. Her information about Wright's family tree, as well as the family background of his wives and Mrs. Cheney, is more thoroughly presented than I have seen elsewhere.

One must not expect a thorough critique of Wright's buildings here -- there are too many works to be considered and there are many other resources, old and new, for such explorations. "In the Nature of Materials" leaps to mind. However, this book does flesh out the man and in some ways dispels some of the outlandish tales and outright fabrications about his life, toward which Wright was oft inclined.

It should be noted that Secrest is one of the Wright biographers who mistakenly limit the contributions of Isabel Roberts, who was a draughtsman/architect in her own right. She defines Roberts' roll simply as: "Isabel Roberts, secretary ". She cannot be faulted too much, having swallowed the red herring presented by Frank Lloyd Wright himself when writing about the Oak Park "...studio adjoining my home, where the work I had then to do enabled me to take in several draughtsmen and a faithful secretary, Isabel Roberts..." In future, Wright biographers would be wise to consult research done by John A. Dalles presented in his article, "The Pathbreaking Legacy of Ryan and Roberts", in "Reflections", the journal of the Historical Society of Central Florida, Summer 2009; pages 8 and 9.

You may wish to read Wright's disingenuous "An Autobiography" (1943) as well as some of the family books - "The Valley of the God-Almighty Joneses: Reminiscences of Frank Lloyd Wright's Sister, by Maginel Wright Barney, 1986, and his son, John Lloyd Wright's "My Father Who Is On Earth", G P Putnam Sons, NY, 1946. But consider this a mostly reliable guide to Mr. Wright's long and theatrical life.

Precious little discussion of Wright's work...

Secrest's "biography" focuses exclusively on the personal life of Wright, and to that end it seems fairly complete. Secrest attempts to explain Wright's inflated sense of self, his drive to succeed and his willingess to use others as means to his ends by reflecting on his Welsh background, his family's history in Wisconsin and his relationships with his immediate family, particularly his mother. My complaint is that Secrest does not carry this analysis over to his architecture - most of his works receive a paragraph or less. I was hoping for a biography of Wright that placed his work in an socio-historical framework as well as accounting for his personality. Secrest briefly mentions how Wright bristled at being called a pre-modernist and how much of a romanticist he was, but she only mentions this to elucidate Wright's personal interactions with others. If you're looking for more info that places Wright's work in a historical or theoretical framework, look somewhere else.

Great resource for physics teachers.

I've been teaching high school physics for more than a decade. I use physlets in my class at least once a week. The computer simulations are wonderful, forcing students to approach problems with thought and analysis first, formulas second. I often don't have time or equipment to set up all the demonstrations and experiments I'd like. For kids so used to video, these computer simulations really connect. These simulations are a good complement to the online PHET (Physics Education Tools).

Brilliant softwate

The applets on this is just great for understanding many physics concepts. It covers most topics (mechanics, waves, electrostatics, magnetism etc), it has interactive menus so you can change the parameters in the experiments and it logs the output and plots them for you.

Highly recommended for any high school student and even university students. An excellent teaching and learning tool. I highly recommend it to my students since it moves abstract concepts closer to the concrete stage.

If you are a parent, this is a MUST have for your child to aid their learning of physics concepts.

The downside is some of the applets do not work but they are a small minority. Note you need to enable the java function on your browser, just go to Sun Microsystems website, it should work.

In the West, innovations in new public management (NPM) have been regarded as part of the neoliberal project, whilst in China, these reforms have emerged from a very different economic and social landscape. Despite these differences however, similar measures to those introduced in the West have been adopted by the Chinese state, which has largely abandoned the planned economy and adopted market mechanisms in the pursuit of improved economic efficiency and growth.

Evaluating the results of these reforms in both China and the West between 1978 and 2011, this book shows that despite substantial improvements in economic efficiency in both cases under consideration, there have been considerable negative impacts on the distribution of wealth, access to public services, levels of poverty, public health, and the incidence of crime. Further, this book explores the different results of NPM in China and the West and the conclusions Paolo Urio draws have timely significance, as he suggests that China has been able to change its policies more rapidly and thus more effectively respond to the challenges posed by the current economic crisis.

Drawing on both Western and Chinese sources, this innovative book compares the consequences of their public management reforms, taking into account the impact on both the economy and society. As such, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars working in the fields of Chinese studies, Asian studies, business, economics, strategic public management and comparative studies in capitalism and socialism.

About the Author

Paolo Urio is Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland. Professor Urio has undertaken research on China’s reforms since 1997 and has published Reconciling State, Market and Society in China (Routledge 2010) on the subject. Between 1998 and 2003 he organized and directed a programme that trained in public management more than 400 senior Chinese civil servants and senior Party cadres.

The book itself is fine, but it the Uzbek is written using Cyrillic letters instead of Latin letters like the previous book. If you or your teacher can read Uzbek in Cyrillic you should be fine but if you can't the book is useless.

The first book I purchased had Uzbek in Latin letters and this one is in Cyrillic alphabet. So it is nearly useless to me and I wish it had said that in the book description. I'm very sorry that I can't use this book. I am happy to say that those who read Cyrillic will be fine with it.

I like the price but hate these because they use OCR ...

Another scanned text. I like the price but hate these because they use OCR and totally screw up sections of the text to make them undecipherable. Why can't they just leave the original scan alone? This one is better than most because there are fewer areas where the OCR screwed up. It also has a number of original illustrations left intact. It is very short. Content on fire assay is basic.
