About the Author
Arnold O. Allen is a member of the technical staff of the Performance Technology Center at Hewlett-Packard. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from UCLA. Much of the material in the book was developed for classes in probability, statistics, queueing theory, and computer modeling that he taught as UCLA, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard. Dr. Allen has been active in teaching conference tutorials on computer modeling and was the keynote speaker at two international conferences.

Competent author, poor presentation skill

I was about to review the book the first week I got it. Now two months passed and I think I am ready to review this book. I am a 4th year computer science phd student, with personal interest in statistics, which is not my thesis direction.

1. This book is a thorough book, not only cover the area of traditional probability theory, statistics and stocastics, it also thoroughly discussed queueing theory and other advanced topics, in a level of a special book for the topic.

2. This book is of a lot of typos, some of them are unforgivable - essential errors in formulaes. In the 2nd chapter, there are more than one typo per page. The typos are less in the later chapters, but more than any textbook I ever read.

3. The presentation is not good - it is not presented in a nice flow. I have to check back and forth to see where I am in the context. The language of the book is neither neat nor technical - we found a lot of ambiguities in the exercises - different people has different interpretation. Ironically, the author criticized a lot on other statistician's language, I would believe it is better than his. I would say, one may need to pay 1.8-2.5 times effort to understand this book than a well presented textbook.

4. The notation is too much but not good. In chapter 5., they author made a notation table in the front and for each chapter, there is a notation table in the appendix. Well, it is very normal to find some notations in a chapter not appears in the notation table.

5. The author want to cover too much content. Surely he know about the content but when he feel it is too challenging to cover, he put a citation there. To me, it may be better to just skip that part.

In general, if the author could sit down for a month or two, reread every chapter he wrote, think if it make sense or necessary, and re-present the book and correct the typos, it deserve 4.5 stars.

Easy to read, complete resource -- great book

The book covers a lot of relevant material in sufficient detail. It's hard to find a good book on probability and queueing theory applied to computer science. This book is one of the best I have seen. The author does an excellent job of explaining the variables used in the different equations contained in the book, and also clearly explains the context in which various equations are used. Everything is well presented and easy to read. I continue to use the book as a valuable reference and highly recommend it.

Interesting but probably poorly understood by executives

A bit repetitive at times, perhaps because the author didn't have permission to discuss a lot of different client projects. I came away thinking that observational research (which includes interactions with consumers - not just watching them) is a sophisticated research and planning activity that only the most advanced corporations (e.g., General Mills, Xerox, Hallmark, P&G, Toyota) understand and hire for (or maybe they use their own in-house experts, something that Abrams discourages). I would also expect that it takes a lot of training and experience for someone to do this without unintentionally influencing the study - although Abrams reinforces the point that this is subjective and qualitative - and that is part of it's value. Sure seems like if a observational researcher can do this well, they could discover things that could change an entire industry (like the Palm Pilot or the Chrysler Mini-Van). Overall, I found the book to be "okay," the method itself - potentially ground-breaking.

About the Author

Christophe Galfard holds a PhD in theoretical physics from Cambridge University. He is coauthor with Stephen Hawking and his daughter on their first YA book, George's Secret Key to the Universe. In the past few years, he has given talks, and written a live show, about our universe attended by more than 130,000 people, of all ages and educational backgrounds.

Ray Chase graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in theater and a minor in cinema and television. He has since worked extensively as a voice-over artist. Among his dozens of audiobook narrations are Ian Douglas' Heritage trilogy and Robert Olen Butler's Christopher Marlowe Cobb thrillers.

Highly recommended for any non-scientist who wants to get a feel ...

I can't praise this book enough. Although at times I had to read a few paragraphs more than once, I've been well rewarded for the effort. It is clear and conversational in tone, but at the same time delivers the science in concise and accurate doses (even when the science is not all that clear in itself). I confess to tuning-out to "string theory", but perhaps at a later time I'll give it another look. Highly recommended for any non-scientist who wants to get a feel for what those scientific-theorist are proposing as the present state of our understanding of the universe.

Pride and Prejudice, my favorite book of all time and one of the most beloved books in English literature, just got a hilarious makeover.

I'm a hardcore Austen fan who has probably seen the 1995 P&P adaptation about fifty times. But it is clear that Dr. Josten's passion for the work far exceeds mine. His annotated version of Pride and Prejudice shows how extreme, and how funny, some obsessive Janites can be.

Ever since Colin Firth emerged from that fateful lake in his white linen shirt, the Austen world has never been the same. Blaine Josten is this fandom personified; a hopeless romantic and devourer of fanfic who nevertheless protests his deeply academic interest in the subject.

A clever parody of the world of Jane Austen fandom, Blaine Josten's Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will make true Janeites laugh out loud.

Sorry, can't recommend

Pride and Prejudice is a favorite book - in my top ten list - and I own several unusual take-offs of it, including "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," (weird, but interesting) the PD James mystery "Death Comes to Pemberly," (workmanlike) and "Georgina Darcy's Diary," (haven't read this one yet.)

Here's another one, "Blaine Josten's Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice." Aims to be funny, but is essentially the full text of Austen's novel with (relatively few) inserted snide remarks. It's an interesting idea, I think there is room for a satire on this book, and I enjoyed reading P&P again, but the quality of the remarks pales badly next to Austen's original words. She is so observant, sly, satirical, and funny herself that it would take a comedic genius to add anything to that. A couple of the inserts were mildly amusing, but fundamentally not successful.

Sorry, can't recommend.

Double bonus! I got to read Pride and Prejudice and I laughed all the way through it! Blaine is really darned funny!! Start with the foreword and just enjoy yourself. You won't regret it! I would write more but now I want to go read it again. :>

Vincent Meelberg is Senior Lecturer and researcher in the Department of Cultural Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and at the Academy for Creative and Performing Arts in Leiden and The Hague. He is co-founding editor of the Journal of Sonic Studies.

Barry Truax is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, where he taught courses in acoustic communication and electroacoustic composition, specializing in soundscape composition.

Perfect book for home or classroom.

I first saw this book in a Kindergarten class. They were using it to write a research paper about Butterflies. I absolutely fell in love with the artwork and the information given. They talk about where they live their life cycle and the differences between Moths and Butterflies. The art reminds me of the background in Max and Ruby cartoon with the Bunnies. The Butterflies have very bright colors and are very realistic. I love this book! I bought it for my son. Oh and yes, Kindergarteners in NYC are being forced to write research papers!
