Quality reference

I bought a copy of this classic textbook after checking it out of the library. As a practicing engineer, I had an undergraduate course in probability, with virtually no statistics (there is a difference). This title, while providing an excellent but cursory treatment on probability, is generous with statistical theory. Many statistics books for engineers are "cookbook" in nature: here's a problem or hypothesis, here's the relevant test statistic, here's its tabulated distribution, here's an example. While these kinds of texts are excellent for bootstrapping self study and practical problem solving, this title provides more. I have continually found it to be a powerful reference by elucidating details that I have not picked elsewhere in self study, thus filling in many gaps in my knowledge of statistics. The theoretical expositions have allowed me to write my own programs to calculate P-values for hypothesis testing for some fairly specialized tests (freeing me from the dependence upon tables).
It's scope is fairly broad, crammed with many basic statistical tests that I have found scattered among many other books. It was designed for a 3 semester course and assumes the reader has knowledge of differential calculus. The title is a reprint of a 1965 2nd edition. Surprisingly for its age, it has chapters on nonparameteric testing, as well as tests of randomness, and I have not found its age to be particularly detrimental. At 600 pages, the reader is sometimes left wanting just a little bit more information. The references cited at the ends of each chapter have been gold mines of additional information (but one needs a library with access to pre-60's statistical journals.) There are student exercises with partial answers in the appendix.
I recommend this text as a fairly comprehensive, secondary reference to the practicing engineering or scientist who wants to not only apply statistical procedures to his research, but also to better understand them.
