About the Author
Johan Hellsten is a Grandmaster and a former Swedish Champion who has represented his country in numerous Olympiads and team tournaments. He has enjoyed many tournament successes and has won individual gold and bronze medals at the European Team Championships.

ONLY FOR THE SERIOUS PLAYER.

This book is for a serious player who aspires to get beyond FIDE ELO 2000.If your aspirations are lower than that you only need to have 100 Endgames You Must Know: Vital Lessons for Every Chess Player 100 Endgames You Must Know, Endgame Challenge, Chess Endgame Trainingand Endgame Tactics: A Comprehensive Guide to the Sunny Side of Chess Endgames.
70 per cent of the positions in the book will not be seen in other books and most positions border between the calculable and incalculable (truly strategic rather than tactical). I was not able to agree fully with some of the solutions, though the strategy suggested would give the best practical chance against a human player and I can say with some degree of certainty that I would not be able to win some of the positions against a stronger player or computer even with sufficient study of the book.
A few of the positions are basic theoretical endgames given in most endgame books and these account for less than 30 per cent.
A club player studying this book may get an understanding of a player of FIDE ELO 2400 and this work is not as taxing as the other endgame strategy books besides it contains 500 explanatory positions and 240 test positions which number is excellent for a book of this size. Though I did not pay much attention to the prose I would say that readers will not experience any difficulty with it.
This book is in a class of its own with regard to the sort of positions it gives but is only for those who would want to go very high in chess.
If you are not aspiring to chess greatness, you should skip this book. If like me you love good endgame books than this book will be a welcome addition to your library.

Right up there with the best end game classics.

Quite a good book which comes close to the current frontrunners of endgame strategy (i.e. Karsten M�ller “How to play chess endgames”). The style of writing is lively and as a result never makes endgames seem dry or boring, which is something they are often seen as. A very fine book I liked working with! Looking forward seeing more being published by J. Hellsten!

Format is worthless.

Why do people put diagrams into books that don't indicate which side is to move? As far as I am concerned books that require you to look at the answer to determine the question are a waste of time. I wish I could get my wasted money back.
